Ask the family who's lost a loved one was suffering from cardiac arrest to have it reset.

^ Invalid point trying to stand on the legs of sympathy.
Its the 21st century. If a person in need of medical attention is relying on the responder to hear an air-raid siren to alert them, something is wrong.

Welcome to the Eastern Shore, if you don't like it then you should move, the sirens have been here for many years and are not going anywhere!

Not that I care to be on the side of those who want it removed, I just didn't see post #2 as an valid argument.

Not that I care to be on the side of those who want it removed, I just didn't see post #2 as an valid argument. I totally agree and with today's technology, a fire siren should have been fazed out years ago, but it is a reality that it is here and will be here to stay for a while, I believe Grasonville just installed a new fire siren. I just think it is pointless that people have to complain over something so stupid as a fire siren that has been here for years!

"Invalid point trying to stand on the legs of sympathy. " Not trying to stand on the sympathy of others... We do still rely on the house sirens for alerting us to calls for response. Pagers do work well, and has been a great improvement to the fire service. However, they are not always that reliable. The paging system is old, and sometimes takes a crap. As well, there are times when the radio system takes a crap, and dispatch needs to rely on old technology too. I've said it before.... those that feel really strong about the house siren being disabled, please contact the KIVFD and have a discussion, not a shouting match. Provide suggested solutions, and don't add to the problem. They might be amenable to reducing the number of times the siren sounds, the number of times it sounds for re-alerts, etc.

FFIIInobody
I have mentioned the same thing many times under the many threads pertaining to the siren but it seems no one has contacted KIVFD. I really do not know why there is so much hatred towards the KIVFD when other fire dept.'s have sirens that blow just as much, if not more and yet never a complaint about them. All the complaints are from people who recently moved to the island.
However, I did get a good laugh calling the siren "big ben", thats a new one!!! I noticed this thread was started at 403 am asking why the siren blew at 452 am... so it appears you were already awake to begin with.

I heard it go off around 340am last night. I enjoyed it and it helped me fall asleep like a mothers lullaby.

FFIIInobody I really do not know why there is so much hatred towards the KIVFD when other fire dept.'s have sirens that blow just as much, if not more and yet never a complaint about them. I wonder about that. KIVFG has spent a great deal of time collecting money for the new station that was necessary because of all the calls they respond to. It led me to believe KIVFD was far busier than the other companies. If that is the case, then I would think the KIVFD siren was going off more than the others. I live near one of those other sirens. We have gone through three phases in the last 10 years. There was the time the siren wasn't heard much at all. Then there was the period when I could just about set my watch to it. Now, we're back in a quiet phase and I think the last time I heard it was a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon. From what I've read here about the KIVFD siren I am sure this one doesn't go off nearly as often. Check your D.S.T. settings.

The fact that this siren issue comes up so frequently, and always as an exasperated complaint, substantiates that it is perceived as a nuisance. It’s loud. It sets off dogs, wakes babies, wakes adults at all hours of the night; interrupts conversations, some have said even sport events; and any other unknown disturbances. Naturally, there have been multiple attempts to condone the siren’s use. But practically every attempt falls within Rob Moore’s poignant observation of “Invalid point trying to stand on the legs of sympathy.” Just review all the answers put forth under the scope of Rob’s decree and where is the objectivity? It is all sympathy. He, further, makes another excellent point (without sympathy): “Its the 21st century. If a person in need of medical attention is relying on the responder to hear an air-raid siren to alert them, something is wrong.” As I understand it, the ambulances that respond to medical emergencies (not requiring fire apparatus) are manned 24/7. So why is the main siren activated if they are already on the way? What is a sensible/objective reason for activating an air raid siren, especially at 3:34 A.M.? Secondly, as has been explained to me, there are many more ambulance calls than there are fire/rescue calls. So if the air raid siren is not necessary for the bulk of the calls, think of how its absence would enhance the bucolic environment that the Island’s residents desire. I would like to think that the KIVFC would like to do what they can to help with what is, obviously, an irritating nuisance for their neighbors. Eliminating the single siren blast for first aid calls is, at best, the first step.

This beat up topic comes second only to the super secret govt installation on the island. If you want to debate there are earlier threads to add pages to ;D
Politico Forum - search on "KI Siren Petition" & "KIVFD Siren"
For all the $ spent on the new fire department it's a shame that they can't man it 24/7. If that case then the siren would be moot and not toot ;D Maybe that portion can use part of it for section 8 housing or homeless shelter...hmmm.

"The siren was going off in plenty of time, I just didn't take it serious enough," Butler said
Who would take it serious if it goes off 10 times a day like ours!

Good point, but if you live in a tornado area, I would think it better to be safe than sorry. And besides, just imagine the benefit of that exercise of running down to the basement, or seeking shelter, and..
