I know it's a busy, hectic, a lot two income earning families working 5-6 days a week now type of world we live in and things do have to get done...but come on, it would be nice if people could hold off till maybe 9am on a sunday morning before mowing the grass, weed whacking, power washing, chain sawing, circular sawing, hammering, leaf blowing or whatever other serenity breaking noise they do at sun up on a sunday morning. It's just not one neighbor, but a lot of folks.....I try to be considerate of my neighbors, why can't they.

I agree MJ but I've noticed at work, stores, restaurants, road traffic, etc etc etc VERY FEW show any respect or compassion for the person near you. and I guess a stop sign just means "Hi, here i come" not stop your vehicle like it use to. just walk in or out of post office or safeway etc and say Hello in a upbeat, cheerful voice some are stunned it makes me chuckle....

I agree...although I think 8 on the weekends is fine...my neighbor was mowing his grass at 7:15 a.m the other day...that was ridiculous...and what makes it even more ridiculous...their yard still looks like crap.....One of my HUGE pet peeves is people with dogs...they have got to be some of the MOST ignorant people around. I am guessing they don't think their dogs constant barking bothers anyone. (oh and I have a VERY WELL BEHAVED GSD) who does NOT bark unless there is something to bark at...and as soon as I tell him to leave it...he is done and comes to me. He is also not an outside dog...or a kennel dog.

Can I add the 4am-5am garbage trucks to that list? I'm pretty sure the rules in Bay City state the you can't start construction work before 7am on weekdays. I think that should include the garbage man..
I totally "get" the hot season and starting early to get a jump on the heat, I've done this myself but 4am and 5am is a little much when the windows are open for the nice weather.....

I've always considered 8am on the weekends as the time when I can start using power tools and other loud equipment.
My motorcycle is also kinda loud, so I try to get moving down the road soon after starting it at 430am during the week. I tend to take rides before 7am on weekends because there are less cars crawling along at super slow speeds on the backroads.
+1 on the garbage trucks. I hate that they make all that noise at 4am. #1 It wakes me up #2 It means I have to remember to put the trash to the curb the night before.

Even though I have a ton on top of a ton to do, I generally wait until at least 9 on Saturdays and about 11 on Sundays. There are plenty of "quiet" things I can do outside until I fire up the boat, tractor, atv, leaf blower, secret test engine from the Aurora Project, etc.... I just try to be respectful of my neighbors even though I don't have to, I just know they leave early during the week and get home late.

What's a 'garbage truck'? I don't think I've ever seen one in KIE's!

I sort of like to get a really early start mowing my yard - as sort of a big thank you to my neighbors that like to play their drum set until past midnight.
9 - 10 AM is our normal "start-up time" in all other instances.

LOL,, I was thinking the same thing about the neighbors who have no trouble with loud parties and holliganism until the wee hours of the morning and then get annoyed at the neighbor mowing his grass at 8 AM on Saturday. Or even worse is the gang that is up all night long and ties the dog out in the morning and lets it bark incessantly while they nap until 2 in the afternoon. just saying...

When we were stationed in Germany, quiet hours were between 11 pm - 10 am for the weekends.... If you started mowing your lawn prior to 10 am.... Chances are someone would call the Quiet Police and turn you in........
I am up at 4 am Mon - Thurs.... and on the weekends usually by 6 am.... but between 6 and at least 8 am I really would like to enjoy the peace and quiet of sitting out on my deck with the paper and a cup of coffee..... Silence is golden....peaceful...etc....
Lucky for me... all my neighbors are of the same mind.... !!!

So... on a related note, how loud is loud enough to warrant calling the police? If a house down the street is playing music loud enough that we, a few doors down, can clearly hear it with our windows closed and TV on, is that loud enough to call the police to complain?
(Note that if it was an immediate neighbor, I'd just call and ask politely for them to turn it down, but I don't have the contact information for this house and have never interacted with them previously.)

Unfortunately Queen Anne's county does not have a real noise ordinance on the books. The police may show up and tell them to quiet down, but they are not doing anything illegal, regardless of how loud it gets. Can't say if it qualifies as disturbing the peace or under another statute, but loud, obnoxious behavior by my neighbors resulted in the county police telling me there was nothing they could do about it.
But hey, on another side note, every single one of them (4 in all) are either in jail on charges ranging from domestic violence to manslaughter, or dead. And all of the crimes the surviving family members are in jail for were committed on each other. The wife killed the husband by running over him with her car. Yes, it was a special year for us. Lastly, all of the current crimes were committed in Pennsylvania.

Well there's got to be some sort of limit on how many cars you can have parked at your house or something. There must be 30 cars there.

Funnel...the only way to get rid of neighbors like that is to move. And even then as we have learned moving to a nice neighborhood does not guarantee considerate neighbors.

I would think that would be warranted, especially if it's late at night... uring the day might be hard to push.... maybe? I'm not following the reference to # of cars though.... There are limits to the # of untagged vehicles you can have, but if they are tagged, or guests, probably not, and thankfully so IMHO.

The loud music takes me back to one of the original points of contention between Pete and his neighbors.. loud drum music from the garage. Events continued to escalate....

Actually, most of our neighborhood is wonderful. We get along great with our immediate neighbors.
Luckily, these sorts of parties don't happen all that often.

Queen Anne County does have a noise ordinance, they use Maryland's state ordinance. It amounts to 60 db at your property line. And they have a meter they can come out to your house and measure the noise you are complaining about. And they will enforce it. I know first hand about this. I and several neighbors were the first to let the police use this new toy of their's on a very noisy drummer whose parents wouldn't listen to our request to tone it downs bit. It ended up they had to spend much money to insulate the room. All we neighbors wanted was to play at a different time and to use drum pads.
Also, as for barking dogs, if a dog barks constantly for an hour, call animal control and they will come out and talk to the owner. If it happens again they will be fined. It helps to call from somewhere in the yard where they can hear the dog barking in the background.

That's good to know about the barking dogs. We have a neighbor in Bay Meadows that lets her dog out at about 6 am every weekend and let's it bark for 45 minutes to an hour. I get up at 4 am Mon.-Thurs so it would be nice to sleep in a little on the weekends.

I have enjoyed all of the replies here...very interesting. Yes, there is a noise ordinance. Last summer I contacted the county about a huge problem...Lowery's Market. Every 2-1/2 minutes there was a very loud gunshot going off. I finally figured out where it was coming from and I went to them and politely asked if they knew what that gunshot noise was. The son became very obnoxious with me, telling me that they needed that to keep the birds off their corn. Maybe in Iowa where you have thousands of acres. I almost moved. Contacted the county through email. They immediately responded..came to my house and said that they went and had a talk with them. This year...NO GUNSHOTS! I still won't shop there, though. Summer from hell. Started at dawn and ended at dusk.
