I love sports as much as the next guy but I deeply feel that naming the high school teams the " Buccaneers " is morally wrong. Just the name buccaneer brings up images of violence. Buccaneers went about shooting, raping and pillaging! They were legal pirates! That's way to strong of a image for our youth to be labeled with, it can't be a positive image for them!
I believe that the name of Kent Island Buccaneers should be changed because of the label of violence it places on our youth!
We need a new name, something fitting for our children, something that won't leave a scar on them.
How about the Kent Island Rock Fish. Sounds better.

While we are at it let's change the Indians, Redskins, Blast, Raptors, Predators, Devils, Pirates, Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! Oh, and thank god we don't have the Washington Bullets anymore.

Wow really??? That's totally out of left field! My HS mascots (went to 2 HS due to a move) were cougars and cavaliers... We also had patriots (admittedly kinda cool), warriors & rams...
Wow.... Sorry I think it's kinda ridiculous... It's not offensive... And really rockfish?? Yea that's a great one... Nothing sounds tough like a rockfish...
Signed a proud Buccaneers fan, supporter and mom!!

You seriously think that the name of a high school mascot is going to leave a "scar" on the youth that attend KIHS? That an extremely large headed goatee sporting image is going to push some kid into a life of violence? What an interesting defense that would make.... "Sorry sir, it was the overtly hostile mascot of my youth that drove me to shoot, rape and pillage." GO BUCS!!

My son was the 1st class to go through Kent Island High from 9th to 12 grade graduating in 2002...These kids are the one's who picked...The Kent Island Cobras...every kid I know picked that name...and when they said the Buccaneers had won...the kids were confused as none of their mutual friends had picked that name. Than I find out that the "voting" was for show...they had already picked the name before they let the kids vote...I always hated that name...but "they" as in the people in power wanted it to be a nautical theme...
Oh and as for the "violence" that name promotes...LOLOLOL too funny.

'Kent Island Cobras'? A dangerous and deadly snake. Why would we want people to associate us with such an animal. Think of the psychological damage to our children. How about something that does not strike fear in people? We should pick a name that would not offend anyone or single any group out. How about a beach ball? Surely the 'Kent Island Beach Balls' could not have negative effects on our children.
Oh wait, I remember reading a story about a baby that choked on a beach ball. I can only imagine what would be going through our children's minds being called beach balls knowing that tragic story of that child. Life changing scary!
We should be able to come up with something. I was thinking about baby kittens, but they do have teeth and could probably pierce the skin if provoked. 'Kent Island Baby Kittens' could instill psychological damage that could haunt our children for the rest of their lives.
Maybe something island related? 'Kent Island Sand"? Lots of sand on Kent Island. Would the children relate this to hot sand on their feet? Those poor children just thinking about walking across hot sand could traumatize them for life.
Perhaps we should just stick with 'Kent Island High School Kids'. Non offensive, no hidden meaning, and pretty bland.

Let's make them the "Superstars" or "Superheroes"so they all think they are great and nothing bad will ever happen to them.

Let's make them the "Superstars" or "Superheroes"so they all think they are great and nothing bad will ever happen to them. Call them 'Superstars' and you're setting them up for a lifetime of disappointment. You've raised the bar for their life standards to an unreachable level that will surely leave them feeling inadequate. And as far as 'Superheros', the first time they tie a pillowcase around their neck and jump from the porch to realize they can't fly - devastating! The psychological damage would surely be irreversible. Maybe we should get rid of school names all together - for the children!

I'm the guy that thinks everyone that plays in the league doesn't deserve a trophy, but lo and behold they all get one anyway. This is a much bigger problem than I thought and it would be proper to have a football game where it is the Kent Island Children vs. the Queen Anne Children. Of course, if we do that, someone will say they are a young adult!

I am sure the current rash of vandalism and distruction in coverfields is the main cause. You can have good parents but when the school promotes violence well........... Kent Island Rock Fish! Go Fish!

Really? How are the two related? Now the school promotes violence and that's why there's a rash of bad kids running thru cloverfields? Couldn't have anything to do with the fact that as a society we promote "everybody's a winner" "precious children who should never be disciplined" "love them not punish them" or countless other clichés about raising kids... I mean when our kids run our lives and we as parents have bought into the idea that disciplining our children is a bad thing and heaven forbid we spank them! We also spoil them terribly! Really think about it... When u were a kid did u have every new electronic/toy tha came out? Did you go to mom and dad and demand money/clothes/toys/etc because u were entitled to it or cause that was their job? NO!!! And if u did u probably got in quite a bit of trouble! Problem is that we as parents in general are leaving the raising of our children to tv, culture, schools, etc and then when things go wrong we have someone/thing to blame and it's not our fault! It's is our fault! All of us to a degree! A school name does not constitute promoting violence. That's about as absurd as saying A kid shot up a friend because he played halo all the time.. Come on now!!! Until parents pick up the reins and start... Oh I dunno parenting... Then we will remain on this slippery slope.... Stop blaming silly things like a name of a mascot

Football? Lacrose? Maybe the school should encourage non-violent sports as well. 'Bet you blink before I blink', 'Pin the tail on the Donkey' and "Pull my Finger' would all be non-violent, yet competitive games.
(On second thought, scratch 'Pin the tail on the Donkey'. The thought of that poor donkey with multiple tails attached by a steel pin could really scar the children)

OK how about Kent Island Ospreys. Go Ospreys! Sounds good! Better to be represented by a bird than thugs! The students will be better people once we get this name changed!
