The new traffic pattern at Riva Rd & West St. is some piece of engineering. Cutting off the direct shot to Rte 50 East and forcing both lanes of the Riva traffic to go down West Street, then make a left on Solomons to 50 East instead was a stroke of genius. Now we have to merge left through TWO lanes of traffic that is simultaneously trying to merge right, instead of just the one lane we had before. This doubles our opportunities to be cut off or sideswiped by someone not paying attention or being aggressive.
And just as a little icing on this delightful change, the right turn on red from Riva was eliminated, creating opportunity to back up traffic much more than the old way.
As a little added bonus, out of town guests trying to go east leaving hotels in on & near Riva Rd no longer have that easy straight shot. Instead they get to go to the aforementioned West St/Solomons intersection, where they have a 50/50 chance of being in the correct lane to get on Rte 50. If they guess wrong, they have the option of cutting someone off to make the on-ramp, or slowing suddenly to merge in when they realize their error, creating the opportunity to be rear ended by someone not paying attention.
This traffic change is much better than those pink squares that were put on the bridge. Those are pretty much ignored by all. With this intersection reconfiguration, traffic engineers have created an opportunity to have a real impact (in more ways than one) on eastbound Rte 50 traffic!
