Went to L&L for crabs over the weekend - what a dissapointment! We ordered Large - but what we got were medium at best. And they had an AWFUL taste. I only managed to eat a few and had to stop because they were so bad. With some, all you could taste was bay water - others just had a stale fishy taste. I've lived in MD all my life and have been eating crabs forever - these were by far the worst I've ever had. And they weren't cheap - $35 for a dozen. Can anyone recommend a place to get good crabs? I keep hearing how plentiful they are this year - but the prices are staying high. Is it too much to ask to get good, reasonably priced seafood on the Eastern Shore?

I always use the Stevensville Crab Shack on Route 8 at the entrance to Hemmingways / Beach Club. They aren't the cheapest sometimes, but they are consistant and good. I don't even bother with anyplace else.

Well maybe L&L only gives the heavy/big ones to people who place big orders... Mine were gross and I'll never go back there.
The best crabs I've ever had were ones that I caught myself in local areas. Heavy, clean and delicious! And cheap too!
If anyone finds a place with good prices or just good crabs, please post so we can all enjoy them! Thanks!

Bushel of crabs get steamed to order. Dozen of crabs get warmed over. That means they were steamed in the morning and hit with a quick re-steam. Warmed over crabs are terrible in my opinion. I would suggest buying a small steamer from KMART and buy your crabs live. Steaming crabs is very simple and you can find all the information you need here. Http://www.bluecrab.info

Good luck with your steaming. I know you will enjoy them a little bit more if you steam them yourself.

Don't want to mess with steaming? Last year we always went to Mr. B's on State street. Heavy and generally very good. Still too early for good local.

We have gotten crabs from Hunters in Grasonville for years now and have rarely been disappointed. We always get them live and steam them ourselves. Once they know you as a regular, it seemed we got better crabs. I guess they gotta take care of their repeat customers.

I used L&L the other day, aka smokehouse grille- news to me. I had a gift certificate (from L&L). called the phone # on the GC, they answered, I ordered (told them I had a GC), I went to pick it up, showed them the GC and guess what? They're not L&L anymore..... and wouldn't honor the GC.
A guy from the back came out and tried to explain it but didn't do a good job. basically he told me to persue it legally... (real good PR)
I asked about the name above the door still saying L&L, The name ON the door still saying L&L, and the L&L name at rte. 18 was still up, and BIGGER than the Smokehouse name. He didn't budge.
Needless to say that a $15 Gift certificate has cost them my business, I wont be back.
I really hate gift certificates, and gift cards. send cash.
Hey L&L/Smokehouse grille: CHANGE YOUR SIGNS!

I have never had a good experience at L&L. Stopped going there about a year ago after repeated poor service. Crab Shack is expensive. Labor day crabs were medium at best for $175! (Last minute decision) Usually better than this but it was a holiday weekend. Always had good food and service from Hunters. They know my wife by name and always get overstuffed bushel, extra seasoning, etc.

I don't get Smoke House not meeting customers demands?? Have those of you with trouble talked to the owners? I know them and they are pretty decent people... have always had a great experience.

No Surprise to me with the attitudes in there. This time it is "It's the pits" That name may work for pit beef, but it aint much of a name for Seafood. Did they drop seafood from the venue?

No it is the same business as before, just added BBQ, Smokehouse Grill was the same. Smokehouse Grill was run by the husband and the L&L seafood part was run by the wife. Both are gone and the owner of It's the Pits has L&L Seafood now. The nature of the business has not changed just the owners.
Smokehouse Grill still does catering just not from that building anymore.

I used to go to L&L all the time because they had great crabs and their prices were great. The last two times I have gone there I was really disappointed. The crabs sucked! Now we go to the Crab Shack and even though they are expensive it is worth it.
