I think its great that Centreville PD has a speed camera up and running! I am sure there will be many complaints, but as long as it is calibrated and working properly, I say great! To all of the folks that will complain about it, its very simple DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT AND YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEMS!

There was an article in the Record Observer this week, it's not a stationary one at a certain spot, it's one of those mobile vehicle units.....you know, it's mounted to a car. I don't think it kicks in till you're 12 mph over the speed limit, no points I think, and just a fine/tax/fee/penalty of some type if I remember it right.

I drive through Centreville often. I can't think of a single road where speeding is a problem. Everyone goes slow by the courthouse. Everywhere else there is enough room to speed safely.

Agreed, It's all about the money, Is there that much room to speed in there? Is it THAT big of a problem?? How much time did police spend there before justifying this expenditure??? Sounds like big brother gubbment had some money they HAD to spend.

To all of the folks that will complain about it, its very simple DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT AND YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEMS! And lets not forget the rest of that mentality, If you have no drugs in the car, what's the harm in letting the nice officer search it? Lets look at the faulty(?) cameras in Baltimore, giving out tickets to cars that are stopped, yeah, that works pretty good for them. At least they are getting all brand new upgraded cameras due to the publicity

If I ever get one of these I'm going to ask to face my accuser when I take it to court... There will either be the police officer or a Representative from the company that set up and tested the speed camera unit in court to testify! Why does everyone get so worked up over this issue? Again as long as the speed camera system is calibrated and tested and found to be working properly, there is no problem with it! YES I AGREE its all about MAKING MONEY, however if you don't speed, you don't have to worry about it!

They do everything so well don't they? Anyone who agrees that it's just about the money, should be pissed off about it. I don't speed through there so I'm not worried, but I do speed on other roads. CAN YOU SAY FOOT IN THE DOOR? Give thham an inch, they'll want a mile next time

Because it does NOTHING to help public safety. Nothing more than another money grab. I don't like the fact that it tickets the owner of the car, not the driver. All this being said, I do not speed through towns, maintaining highway speeds is another story.

It is "all about the money". The camera is in a car so it can rove all over. Watch out, coming to your neck of the woods next. Rich county to mine. The week before it was the State raining speeding tickets on Route 8 south. Today it is the Sheriff mining that stretch of the road. They should change the name of the 10 miles of Route 8 south of 50, Gold Rush. As stated earlier, did not know that speeding was so dangerous and life threatening to warrant the amount of police presence on the road. Now, if only they would use such zeal and patrol the communities that are having problems with vandalism, theft, drugs, etc.

I'm pretty sure I passed it coming up from Doc's a few weeks ago on Chesterfield and Draper Ln. If I recall it was in a white SUV

dd50, if they raise the speed limit, we won't have to worry about it either. Rob, I totally agree, there is no reason why Rt. 50 isn't 65 from the Severn River Bridge to Sandy Point, and from the Bay Bridge to the split and Rt. 301 isn't 60 or 65 up north of Centreville to Delaware. I am also all for 70 M.P.H. where its 65M.P.H. in MD to pass this secession. I am all for the speed limits being raised on the Highways, Interstates, and some county and local roads where it is needed to be raised, however I am all for 25 M.P.H in the towns and residential areas. AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN, I TOTALLY AGREE THE CAMERAS ARE MONEY MAKERS, HOWEVER IF YOU DON'T SPEED, YOU DON'T NEED TO WORRY! I will be the first to admit, I speed on the highways and if i get nailed, I will admit my guilt, take my lumps and move on! B.C. Real cute, that sure shows your intelligence level!

There's PLENTY of reasons why Rt. 50 isn't 65 from the Severn River Bridge to Sandy Point, and from the Bay Bridge to the split..... Drive it much, I say there's dozens of reason everyday, look at the idiots in traffic (IN TRAFFIC) that think they are getting ahead with all their weaving and tgating. If they do this with the 55 limit, what will they be doing if it were 65/70?? There's way too many on and off ramps for those speed limits at thos points in 50/301. Past the split, sure thing, turn it up. I-97, 65 is plenty, the road isn't that long, and you have the idiot factor. Keep the idiot factor in the limits calculation, Make the left lane for passing only and not cruising and we'll all get along a little better for it. As for the camera being in a vehicle, great idea, what, a $20k vehicle to mount a friggin camera in? Another BRILLIANT Brain cramp by our spend and tax gov't If the C'ville PD owns it, it wont go far. Good luck C'ville, get the checkbook out.

50 between the BB and Severn is not limited access and the volume is too great to support the higher limit. Have you ever tried to get on WB 50 at Baltimore and Annapolis Blvd? This is not even an on ramp. Other issues are that approach to the Severn WB there is not enough positive camber on the road to support higher speeds.

Wow, Now we are going to get technical, Rt. 50 is on the books as limited access roadway, The B&A Blvd turnoff westbound slipped thur the cracks and the politics allowed it to remain in 1992 when the roadway was upgraded to interstate standards and all of the traffic signals and turnoffs were removed. US 301 on the Eastern Shore is also on the books as a limited access highway with the exception of Freils entrance, again politics allowed that to slip thru the cracks. A highway is not limited access when businesses and driveways and private driveways allow access to the roadway. Example Rt. 50 between Queenstown and Salisbury.

B.C. Real cute, that sure shows your intelligence level! Oh come on DD, can't you see the smiley emoticon in my post? Do you know what sarcasm is? Or would you like to compare Stanford-Binet scales?? OK, it was a silly comment, but true. Maryland law prohibits virtually everything that violates covenants of the puritans of early Maryland. Many of those silly laws are still on the books. Back to the subject, I just don't think speed cameras are a necessity. Very few people are purposely speeding in a 25 mph zone. In my view most speeding in a 25 zone is just normal lack of attention. Not a blatant violation of law. Maybe if the threshold for tickets was 15 mph over the posted speed I could live with it. But who knows what the local jurisdictions set the trigger at?? And history has shown us that electro-mechanical devices are not reliable. As posted above, the town needs money. Easy to target the patrons of Doc's and the boat ramp. :/

You want to see a road that NEEDS to have a 65mph limit? Check out Rt 32 some time. It is impossible to go 55 on that road. You could do 75 safely. I can't believe they have never raised it to 65

I had to laugh a couple years back when one of the morning news programs showed the average speed on I97 .. I think it was about 82 mph!
