The County Commissioners this evening will be discussing a proposed Memorandum of Understanding between the county and the YMCA of Talbot County. This document is available on the county website and states that the QAC is donating the site (in Centreville), and is offering construction financing to the tune of $8 Million? ?? It says the Y will pay back $4 million through money it hopes to raise privately in the county. Thoughts on this forum folks?

A YMCA is sorely needed in QA County. I've had my kids in the Easton summer camp several years and it's a great program. Although they are probably getting too old for camps I'm sure the local families with small kids would really benefit from having one closer

Wow! We can afford to double the commissioners pay and donate 8 million to the YMCA of Talbot County plus the land too? WOW! And then we get to pay dues to the Y to use their facilities....Aren't their dues similar to other privately owned gyms in the area? I guess the private gym owners in Centreville will be closing up shop soon, creating even more vacancies. How can they compete against the tax subsidized gym?
Now don't get me wrong, I am not anti-YMCA, but I am against using tax dollars to do it. Why cant we have our own YMCA of Queen Annes county? Why is this being run thru Talbots? Is Talbot guaranteeing us the 4 million in private donations from QAC? What happens if they don't raise the 4 million?
SPEND SPEND SPEND! Didn't these 5 commissioners get the memo? Republicans are not supposed to be the TAX AND SPEND PARTY! These 5 are so making me proud to be a democrat! How about they don't sign this deal and give us back the tax rates we had with the Democrat commissioners!

I just heard we haven't even paid for the land we are "donating" to the Y. I guess you are 100% correct FrankF! They don't fund their donations either!

Some forget about two unfunded wars, deficit spending for defense, deficit spending for Medicare Part D, etc... ONLY Democratic presidents have had balanced budgets as far back as Eisenhower. Facts to conservatives are tough I know.

I tried asking the question why the YMCA would purchase the home of its CEO at a price higher than surrounding homes were selling for back in 2010. I was told it was for an incoming employee who transferred here and was going to purchase the home, over 3 years later the YMCA still owns that home. Contacts to national YMCA said were replied to stating each local YMCA has a board that is responsible. The Star Democrat said they saw the property sale but I guess the YMCA advertises enough for them to overlook it.
Still seems fishy to me...... The home is on Redwood Ct in Easton.

Maybe people will get together and protest and run another group out of coming here

I don't believe it's a matter of running anyone out of here, at least from my perspective. The YMCA is overall a fine organization. It's that the county has decided to give them $8 million and a valuable piece of property. Practically unheard of here as far as I can remember to a private organization. That's a lot of money.

Maybe people will get together and protest and run another group out of coming here We are not protesting them coming here, more like we are bribing them with our tax dollars, 8 million plus land, to come here. But if you want to look at it that way, how about the gym owners who INVESTED here already? Shouldn't we support them? They didn't need 8 million and donated land. They didn't take our tax dollars, they only add to our county tax income.

If they want it in Centreville let the town finance it. Also - since the Y gets the dues and profits let them finance it. There is competition from private enterprise and has anyone asked the Boys & Girls Club?

I think that's great, I just wish they'd put one on Kent Island, maybe in the old outlets. I'd love having a pool to go to, I'd definitely join. Not driving out to centreville though.

Non profit is the key. We loose tax money on churches and hospice etc., because their real estate is tax exempt. Why not a YMCA? QAC was dumping money into Chesapeake College's aged swimming pool, so the average person (who couldn't afford a membership to a private gym) could exercise for little or no money. Look into the monies QAC receives from the feds and state for parks and rec. Also economic development. The private gyms are "For Profit" and most can't afford the membership fees.

Ravensfan, the YMCA is a non-profit, correct? So we will losing tax revenue there as well. MarkP raises a good point. Island Athletic is $37.50/month for an adult. I believe Club One is around the same monthly fee. Many are under the assumption that the Y is free, or almost free. Not true. If they can't afford one of the already existing gyms, they certainly won't be able to afford the Y.

Others receive breaks in the fee, if they can show need or inability to pay full fees. Read up on what the Y stands for and the good that they do. They are deemed non profit/charitable for a reason, by the IRS.
