I am looking into having hardwood/laminate floors but into my home. I have Abby and Chesapeake flooring coming to give me estimates. So my question is, anyone have any experiences with either place good or bad? I am torn between what type of floors. I have to dogs, 4 kids, and run an in home childcare that being said I need something very durable. Does anyone have any input on flooring types? Thanks in advance!

Abbey (Stevensville) re-did our bathroom floors. We went with wood floors in one, and some tile-like composite (I forget what it's called--it looks like tile, kind of feels like tile, but it's not quite tile) in the others. They did a good job and the price ended up being pretty reasonable.
I think with kids, I'd be reluctant to do too hard a surface. Laminate is probably your best bet, then wood floors. I'd avoid tile or tile-like composites (unless in a bathroom).

Several other things to consider. Laminate floors are simply a wood print paper glued to a particle board plank. You mentioned you had dogs. Dog pee (or any water spill, soft drinks, wet clothes, pool or tub towels, etc) left on the floor overnight will start to bubble the floor. They also make a vinyl laminate flooring that is unaffected by moisture. All laminate flooring will scratch, so pick a quality flooring with a warranty. I put down a vinyl flooring in a beach house because of the pool, and immediately scratched it moving the furniture back into place.

I am doing this too and had samples delivered from simplefloors.com It is really a personal thing, but they have flooring made out of stranded eucalyptus that is very durable. It is an engineered floor. Again, if you are worried about animals, I don't think they will hurt this stuff. This is one example www.flickr.com/search/?w=53946691@N02&q=sunstoneCheck out the site. The guys name that I am working with is Mark Genova. You can PM me if I can help further.

We just finished putting hardwood down throughout our downstairs. We bought the wood ourselves and paid our contractor guy to put it down. He is the one who steered us to, www.woodfloorsplus.com/ up in Glen Burnie. This is where a lot of the builders go. Top Quality, and the beat every ones price. They have installers too, but our guy let us help with the installation for a better price. Must check them out before you buy, you'll save a lot. With dogs and kids your floor ARE going to get scratched up. You will want something that can be "refinished" when the kiddo's & pets are gone. We put felt pads (peel & stick)on all furniture legs touching our floors.

Dito on Jake post. I paid $3.50 sq. ft.at Wood Floor Plus for 3.5" wide oak. I found an installer from Glen Burnie that charged $1.85 per sq. ft. Installer did a great job and Wood Floor Plus were good to deal with.

L&C installed my oak wood floor. I would definitely use them again. Their facebook page is: www.facebook.com/LCforyourfloorsAlso Wood Floors Plus will recommend installers that are some of their best customers and have installed many wood floors that they purchased from them. The install price ranges from $1.85 to $2.50 per square foot. The installers add in extra for shoe molding (and other molding) installation. All the installers that Wood Floors Plus recommends will install wood floors for you and you will contract them separately. I made several trips to pick up materials from Wood Floors Plus and there were always several installers picking up materials for their jobs. If you do not want to pick up the materials yourself, I know L&C would pick up the stuff for you. I wish I had known before I purchased ceramic tiles from Home Depot as Wood Floors Plus also has a good selection of high end tile as well as some carpet. Wood Floors Plus are straight shooters and I have trust with them. I had a minor problem with the Mohawk 3.5' oak floor I had picked up. One of the many boxes of flooring was mislabeled with the wrong color. I had to make an extra trip from Kent Island to Glen Burnie late on a Friday afternoon and had to fight the Bridge Traffic on the way back (Installers were waiting for me to return). It really was not Wood Floors Plus fault but an error from Mohawk. Wood Floors stepped up without much effort and gave me a $100 Credit. Good outfit!!

We have done our house but we have done all the work. I would like to add something here. 1. Laminate isnt worth the $$$ unless you are putting it in a guest room or somewhere rarely used. 2. Good point is with animals, kids, high traffic areas getting flooring the can be refinished is a real plus. 3. The interlocking floating floors may be nice since you dont need to nail it BUT if you have door frames or a closet or any space off of the main floored area to do where you need to cut smaller pieces you will need to nail that because cutting the boards down often removes the locking piece of the lip. 4. Stay away from Floor Liquidators...unless you are pretty versed in the flooring products because they don't tell you so much about the pro's/con's of your choice or work with you on what you are planning & what would be good options & how they compare to each other.

The Bellawood from Lumber Liquidators has a 50 year warranty and looks awesome. I believe they also have installers. We installed ourselves (rented nailer from Home Depot) and bought in Delaware to avoid paying Maryland taxes. I kept looking around on the way back to see if O'Malley was hiding at the border with his hand out.

We stopped in a few weeks ago, and had a different experience. Spent a good bit of time with us and seemed ok. Maybe we didn't ask the questions we should have?

Be sure to use someone who has a valid mhic[HASH] and is properly licensed and insured. Both Abbey and Chesapeake are great flooring stores. If you are unsure of your selection you should stop back by the stores and have them show you more options.

After getting several quotes from a few places, we decided to do wait a bit to have it done or do it ourselves in the winter. I was honestly shocked at the prices I knew it wasn't going to be cheep , but holy cow I never expected how high it really was going to be .. lol

As mentioned above it is going to cost you at least around $5.50 per sq. ft. for 3.5" oak per-finished hard wood floors to be installed. There is an Auction House in Baltimore that sells flooring, cabinets, windows, doors, etc. They would send me a post card every 3 or 4 months about upcoming Auctions. It has been a while since I have received a notice from them but they held Auctions for several years. They were located in NE Balto. area. I do not know what local stores charge? See my post above for info. I detailed when I did my house with new hardwood floors. The wood they carry is made by a Brand Name National Manufacturer with warranty: Mohawk. Mohawk has been around for decades in the floor covering business.
