We went to Tarrapin Park today and around 2PM when leaving, witnessed an army of people with fishing poles, tents, and just 'stuff' walking in from the business park road. It seems that the permits aren't stopping the people that they were put in place to stop. They are just parking on the road right outside Terrapin and walking in. Lots of Virginia tags again... One would think that the lawmakers would have though ahead and made that business park road "No Parking" as well as the lots during non-business hours, or permit parking, or something like that. I'm feeling ripped-off for paying for the useless beach permit. Way to go QAC.
I don't care who uses the beaches here, but what I do care about is keeping out the people who are disrespectful to the parks and beaches by littering, blasting music, leaving hooks in the sand, etc.

Well maybe if they had someone PATROLLING the park and not just some fat a$$ sitting at the gate collecting permits or money or whatever he does out there while working on his tan...
The permits was a DUMB idea to begin with and unenforceable because of the trail and walk ins. Personally haven't been back to the park since the permits were started. Too many other nice parks out there that don't charge double taxes for their use.

Parking permit allows you to park in the Terrapin Park Parking lot. This also allows you to be a target of a smashed window and items stolen out of your car.

I'm sure they should have generated some revenue by now, this was the end game as we all know.

My family also paid for a sticker but continued to see people allowed to park there with temp passes and people just hiking/walking in. What gives?

I'm more surprised that anyone actually believed this permit would stop anything that's been going on

I'm more surprised that anyone actually believed this permit would stop anything that's been going on If you mean people will be slobs and litter the beaches like they do, I guess you are correct. I run regularly and part of my route takes me down to the Romancoke Pier and I am amazed at the amount of litter left behind on the pier itself every day. As for the permit issue... looking at those costs to maintain these places, you have to ask: "Where in the county budget is $125K to maintain them? Where else in the budget must cuts be made to free up the money to pay for the expenses outlined? What other services do residents in the county want cut so their use of beaches can be free?" At least the permits provide some revenue from the users of these places. Having lived in AA county a while back, I had to pay parking fees to use either Downs Park or Quiet Waters for years with a higher fee for non-county residents. The uproar over this in QA county is surprising. Is it that people feel the county should provide everything for free to its residents even when a minority uses the beaches paid for with taxes from everyone?

Burnerbill, as far as whether we think everything should be free: I think the issue is that we don't think we're getting anything out of it for our $35. We've still got the same problems (the problems were less annoying when they were free) and the $35 appears to just be paying to compensate those working for the beach permit program (and the revenue raised may not even exceed the cost of administering this program).

Everyone knows what the majority of the problem is. Until The sheriffs office and DNR get together and just start hammering the beaches and piers it's not gonna stop and get worse
These parks are easy to park and walk into unlike say Sandy Point and Quiet Waters

If they would start giving tickets to the people that have no sticker instead of giving them the information paper over and over. Then some would not come back. Face most of the trash and fishing poles you have to dodge comes from people who not only don't belong in the park , but they most likely don't belong in the country. They wont go to Sandy Point , because they have to pay to get in and somebody watches them to make sure they obey the rules.

And the thing is, when you actually approach most of these Canadians about their behavior, they just look at you with a blank look and simply respond, "Eh?"

The county ISN'T providing park use for FREE. There's a line item in the budget. That's a double tax. THAT'S the issue as far as I'm concerned. That park has been NEGLECTED for the past 10 years at least - with very little maintenance being done. Where did those tax dollars allocated for the parks go?

We wanted to do our music festival ("Island Bay Day") there to try and keep it on KI but were told that the owners of the business park wouldn't let us park there and would tow cars. Two years later and now they are allowing people who are littering and basically living on the beach illegally to park on their roads and in their lots to avoid paying the fee to park in Terrapin Park... Ponderous.
