alleycat.. we are on the same page. But, I will add... speaking with neighbors and other acquaintances down SKI, have a 7/11 type store somewhere around the Kent Point Rd area would be nice and that would be it. After driving 7+ miles to the store and back and then you realize you forgot the eggs, ugh!!!

Or even better, a Love Point Deli second location.

So, what keeps such a store from opening in the south end of KI? What are the population demographics down Bennett Point Rd compared to what is in SKI? About similar? Would KIDL or QACA oppose it because it means progress and growth?

Open a commercial store south on the island? Blasphemy!!! Keep the island pure, they will say.
Problem is lack of zoning and, most of all, sewage disposal. Ask the folks at Kentmorr what they have to do to keep that place open. No wonder they don't have $$ for décor.
Doode

Doode LOL... we certainly would get that sort of opposition to such a store in the SKI area. As for the potential roadblocks you mention, I have heard similar sentiments about zoning, sewer etc. It does make one wonder if these impediments were no longer a factor, how strong would support be for such a small establishment down there?

I would think the demand would be there, if the product was right. Queen Anne's Marina tried a little store years ago that did not last long. Was never in it so I can't say much more than that would strike me as a tough location as it is out of the way.
Without any research beyond general knowledge, I would expect there is a greater number of households SKI than the Bennett Point area, with a significantly lower household income.
Something around Kent Point Road makes sense.

I would love to see a tastefully designed convenience store down this way. Add to that a small take out place that may not even be available elsewhere on the island at the moment, like a Little Caesars Pizza. It could be built just off Rt8 into the woods a little ways, with just a small sign to let people know it's there.

Building at the south end of the island would not be a good business decision. Sure, it would be attractive for some of us, but people from Bay City or Matapeake would not drive to the south end of the island, and that would be a huge loss. Building a small store across from Bay City or the American Legion would still be the closest store to everyone in SKI while still attracting customers from the Bay City area. JMO

Please leave bay city alone! It has everything In its lap...a little less development would be nice for that community.

I agree, no more Bay City growth. It's the closest suburb to Kent Island City and has experienced more than it's share of urban sprawl during the 30 yeers I have lived here. Once upon a time there was less than half the houses in that community, no Kmart, no Food Lion, no traffic light and no business south of Rte 50 except the real estate office and airport. (not a Bay City resident, SKI)

JMO I truly would not expect folks who live in Bay City, or even Matapeake, to drive towards the south end of KI to go to a convenience store. They are roughly 2 - 3 miles from the shopping center off Thompson Creek and would drive more than that to get to a convenience store located in the vicinity of Kent Point Road. Plus, that is all I would like to see go in, if it happens at all. No small strip center, like the one near Farmer Johns. Just a store with the convenience to get small stuff without the need to drive 7+ miles one way to get. Who knows, it may come one day once the SKI Sewer is in. It does make total sense and the population is down there to support it, I believe.

Let them build up all along 50. Who cares because it's ugly anyway. If the "growth" starts bringing in money, then I want to see either my taxes go down, or services improve.

If you look at Google Earth around the Batts Neck Road area, there are lots of wooded areas where a convenience store could be placed where it would not degrade the area visually. It could be in the woods across Rt 8 or between the parallel portion of Batts Neck and Rt 8, or even back a ways onto batts Neck.
Why the concern of people(Bay City/Matapeake) who live fairly close to Rt 50 anyway? They already have close proximity to Valero, McDonalds, etc. They can actually walk to these places.

Why not along the Rt 50 corridor? It makes sense. But, the naysayers will bring up as a point of opposition the traffic any additional commercial build out will bring. Well, why don't they look in the mirror, because, they will be staring straight at the cause of most of the traffic that occurs in the shopping areas of Kent Island and that is the residents who live here! You know people do not travel from Annapolis and Easton to shop as Chez Big Lots and Le KMart, Safeway etc. It is us! It makes you wonder if these complainers of traffic wish everyone else who lives around here would not go shopping at the same time they do so they would not have to deal with the "locals" shopping at the same time!

If and when, right cruzin. Further south could be better as there is a fair amount of population down Kent Point Rd too. They'd all benefit.

It would probably cut down a lot of the Rt 8 traffic if there were something down this way.

It would probably cut down a lot of the Rt 8 traffic if there were something down this way. One would presume it would. Considering, for me, it is about a 16 - 17 mile round trip to go to Food Lion and back, taking into consideration gas and my time to get those odd items you need, it would be nice and a time saver. One wonders how many folks go up and down Rt 8 just to get a couple things at the store daily versus the "weekly" shopping trip?

I'd be happy if someone would put in a drug store near the Rt8/US50 interchange, so we wouldn't have to get on US50 or cross over it twice to get to one of the three pharmacies on the island. When Walgreens moved next to Rite Aid, it made no sense at all, when they could have locked in the most densely populated portion of KI by staying close to RT8.
