I know several coworkers have pellet stoves and absolutely love them and it cuts their bills dramatically.
Guess we shall find out hopefully next winter

Only a handful of probable issues. The 2 things that will kill a pellet stove in a hurry are 1. crap pellets 2. lack of cleaning and maintenance. I'm in my 5th heating season and the most I have had to buy for mine is a few exhaust blower gaskets. They self-destruct every time you clean the blower. I buy them on eBay two for ten, the guy in Grasonville sells them for $25 each! Here is a link to a troubleshooting flow chart. www.hearthtools.com/parts/lowlimit.htm. It's a Whitfield. I wish it would stay lit...

Our electric bills are the highest during the coldest months. Last month was $580. We had a pellet stove and did not find that it saved us any money over electric after purchasing pellets plus it was just a pain to have to do so. Our house is 2600 sq ft. We're getting solar panels installed next month! Cannot wait! We're doing it through Veridian who contracts out to Solar City. There is no charge - no catch. We provided them with our last 12 electric bills, then they came out to look at our house and the way the sun hits it to determine if we were eligible. We now have a fixed rate and our bill will never be over $225. Contact our representative, John at 301-980-8658 if you're interested.

I know my last electric bill was high, but I just got off the phone with Delmarva Power, and we can all expect an even higher bill for January. They said they changed the meter reading dates starting in Jan, and it could be as much as 42 days on our January bill, in conjunction with the cold weather - Ouch. Not nice.

You could always buy a free standing wood stove. After a bit of initial costs it should save a lot especially if you are able to scrounge free firewood.

I'm 3 months into my heating season and have consumed 2.5 tons of pellets at $239 a ton. I can get them a little cheaper but there are good brands as well as bad brands. My high electric bill during this period was $175 for a nice size home. This puts me about $375 a month in a neighborhood where $600 - $700 is the norm. ^^^ very nice. My house is wide open so I do believe the heat will travel well from the pellet stove
What kind of pellets do you burn? Who delivers them?

Mine went up a buck from $152 to $153. I figure it was that cold snap we had.
