For those who don't know, a homeless shelter has been approved and will be built on State Street in Stevensville, in close proximity to Bayside and Kent Island Elementary Schools and the Cross Island Trail. The religious group that is running this most likely has nothing but good intentions, but are seemingly blind to what they are imposing on the area. I came across the "Save our Stevensville" Facebook page and after watching the videos from the most recent school budget hearing at Bayside Elementary, it's clear to me that our Commissioners either: Don't care. Are in someone's pocket. Or, are incredibly rude and stupid. If you get a chance take a look at the video that I'm referencing. The rest of the page is, well, opinions at best, but the videos sure show the arrogance or stupidity of the whole thing and our lawmakers. Here's the link to the page. I couldn't pull the video from it to post here for some reason. www.facebook.com/SaveOurStevensville?fref=nf

That video was awesome and I applaud the efforts of Mike Ranelli and those that had the opportunity to speak that night. I would have been there myself but had lost my voice due to allergies that just kicked my butt over the weekend. What I find interesting is the Site Plan only has 5 proposed parking spaces for a facility that will have an occupancy of approx. 50 - 55 people, including staff. If a Business submitted for a project with that type of parking to occupant ratio, they'd be laughed out of Planning and Zoning. Someone is getting $$$ stuffed in their pockets!!

How could you miss the part of scumbag Moran laughing at the woman? I watched again? I respect the views of the woman in the clip and I believe her passions and beliefs are true but I didn't see anyone laughing at her.

That's because the camera was pointed at her and not the commissioners. Had the camera been pointed at them you would have seen what Mrs. Hart and the rest of the audience saw which was Jim Moran and the other commissioners shrug their shoulders, laugh and be generally condescending to a constituent. Even if you don't agree with your constituent you should at least be respectful about it. Jim Moran has now lost my vote in his next reelection bid.

I believe most people are in favor of the shelter to be built according to plans because they don't want it in their back yard. Looks like a small turnout. When the next election comes vote for your candidate.

Much ado about NOTHING. Work right next to a shelter that's been there for years. Never any problems. This thing is needed in this community and the location couldn't be better. Stop being afraid of your shadow.

All other arguments aside, I don't understand why some think that this is such a great location for the homeless. Shouldn't they be closer to essential services, job opportunities, etc...?

Stop being afraid of your shadow. Well,,, the location CERTAINLY COULD be better. To say that it couldn't is pretty short sighted.

More public services, more businesses, and not as close to several schools. Seems like that would be a better location with less risk.

How about next to a police station somewhere? That should make most folks happier.

The sheriff office in Centreville is right down the street from the schools.

You said that this is the best possible location for a shelter in Queen Annes county, you don't think that downtown Centreville would give them better access to services and jobs?

Homeless People are protect in Maryland as should be. Maryland law now recognizes homeless individuals as a protected class under enacted hate crime statutes. On May 07, 2009 Governor Martin O’Malley signed into law Maryland Senate Bill 151, the brainchild of Republican Senator Alex Mooney. The legislation protects homeless individuals from damage to their self or real property. If a crime is motivated by the race, color, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, national origin, or homeless status, the offense is punishable under the state hate crimes statute. If a perpetrator is convicted of a hate crime, a harsher punishment is imposed. nationalhomeless.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Hate-Crimes-2013-FINAL.pdf

More public services, more businesses, and not as close to several schools. Seems like that would be a better location with less risk. There are two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school all within walking distance of any location in downtown Centreville. And your math on more business might be similarly challenged. Just sayin' ... focus on arguments that are accurate and your case will be stronger.

Just sayin' ... focus on arguments that are accurate and your case will be stronger. Feel free to challenge it and correct anything that I've said, I'll admit that I'm wrong if that's the case. Read my post again, I did not say that a shelter in Centreville would not be within walking distance of any schools. I stand by my statement, you can find a location in downtown Centreville with more public services, more potential jobs, and not as close to several schools. I also think there are less risky locations, even in Stevensville. I don't think that it's a good idea to put a large homeless shelter right next to a park, wooded trail, several communities, and several schools. Hopefully the proponents are done shouting down those of us that are critical of the location of this homeless shelter, I guess we'll see. It's a good discussion to have, although I think it should have been had a few years ago when all of this was originally set in motion.

There was a front page article in the Star-Democrat today about this: Shelter grant complaints found without merit By ANGELA PRICE baytimes@kibaytimes.com STEVENSVILLE — Federal and state housing agencies say a vocal opponent’s complaints about Queen Anne’s County failing to comply with requirements for grants related to a homeless shelter lack merit. Both the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Baltimore field office have found complaints filed by Love Point Road resident Mike Ranelli, in which he alleged violations by the county in complying with Community Development Block Grant requirements, without merit. I have helped with the Homeless Shelter in the temporary location for a few years, and can attest that the homeless in QAC are nothing to be afraid of. I have met retired teachers, veterans and guardian grandparents - who are down on their luck.
We need to support the efforts to help the people in our community who stumble. Not fear them.
