Saturday, September 19th - Kent Island Beach Cleanup's 4th year participating in the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. The Ocean Conservancy’s goal is to bring people together to find solutions for our water and planet. They educate and empower people to defend not only the ocean and its wildlife, but also the millions who earn their living from the ocean. They partner with organizations and individuals around the globe to clean up the world’s beaches and waterways.
The International Coastal Cleanup is a very unique cleanup in that various groups from all over the world, organize their own cleanups, collect debris and record every piece of trash that was collected onto a data card. These data cards list everything from plastic bags, bottles and candy wrappers, to fishing lines and hooks and other debris from recreational and commercial fishing activities and may include items of special concern from a particular area such as illegal dumping activities and random household products. These data cards are then tallied and submitted to the Ocean Conservancy.
Over the last 3 years, Kent Island Beach Cleanups has collected over 15,000+ items, 30,000 lbs of debris and contributed to the Ocean Conservancy’s Annual Trash Free Seas Report. This report is a state-by-state and country-by-country report. These numbers are used to raise awareness, identify hotspots for debris or unusual trash events, and inform policy solutions.
If you or anyone you know wishes to be a part of this amazing cleanup...contact us!
In years past, we have only concentrated on Terrapin Beach Park. This year, we are expanding to include Kent Narrows, Hemingway’s Restaurant Beach and as many of the QAC Parks and Public landings as we can possibly hit! We have members of our board acting as sub-site captains and will need 3-4 volunteers per area. If you wish to volunteer, a site captain, you are a local business owner and wish to put together a group you have a particular area that you believe needs our attention, please contact us.
We welcome all ages and we sign volunteer service work hour forms for students. We also provide all of the cleanup supplies, water and data cards.
Check out this map to choose a location and contact us today!
For more information, please check out our website at www.KentIslandBeachCleanups.com, on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/KentIslandBeachCleanups.
We hope to get as many volunteers as possible and make this years’ ICC a major success! Thank you!
Sincerely,
