Does anyone know if using the side roads, by non local residents, to avoid traffic on 50 is actually a ticketable offense? This is ridiculous, and although I feel for whoever is involved in any accident, a normal 10 minute drive home should not turn in to in excess of 45 minutes!? 80% of the cars in front of me along rte 18 pulled over, lined up and are now clogging the road leading up to the onramp of 50 WB at the base of the bridge!? If any deputies are not responding to the accident they could easily have walked car to car and issued tickets without causing any more congestion, and undoubtedly would have made many KI residents happy in the process!!!

Since there are no signs posted I would say know and this is something that should be done. On the west side of the bridge they have signs posted local only on the two side roads going to the bridge it helps but not 100%. 8 years ago my wife got a ticket for going up the side road and beat it. She told the judge that she pay taxes also and she was going to see a friend. Easy. I would be that if one of a commisioners ever needed to get off the island for an emergency and could not things would change. Want to see traffic, wait till the Harris Teeter is finished on RT 18 by the Safeway and the 258 apartments in Mears. Include a new Hotel by the Narrows Bridge and Four Season and good luck. The island will sink into the bay.

The roads are maintained by state and federal monies, so everybody has the same rights.

On May 13, 2016 I was pulled over on College Parkway after leaving the Revell Downs neighborhood and taking College Pkwy to the bridge because 50 EB was insanely backed up. The Trooper said he pulled me over for 'rat running'; he explained further that it is the term for cut through driving to avoid traffic congestion. After mentioning I was at a friends home in Revell Downs & never on 50, he asked for the friend's name and street address. I assume he verfied her existance or that I was there since when he came back to my car he handed me my license & registration and I was on my way? So, I am confused & curious as to how I can be pulled over for this in AA County but here in QAC it's not possible? I read an article about Montgomery County enacting some type of legislation to actually enforce traffic calming on cut through/resdiential streets, but cannot find the link....

The parallel roads "on the other side" are county roads.
Rt 18 is a STATE road.
Therein lies the difference. Who has jurisdiction.
Because Rt 18 is a STATE road, QA County cannot restrict access to it.
So yes. On this side, we're screwed.

Boy.... that sure sounds like something the bay bridge police would come up with. Those service roads along side of RT 50 (both sides) are state maintained and have the designation of MD 908a thru d. As well as the off ramps to rt 179.

After looking it up, you are correct. They are State owned. Recalling earlier news posts about it, they were called county roads.
And BTW, MdTA had nothing to do with it. They were Anne Arundel County cops giving out tickets.

It was actually a MD State Trooper who pulled me over.

Good luck ever getting that enforced. It's a state road so nobody can tell you stay off of it anyways.
Good luck getting the manpower to do it also with all the ramps and side roads. Will never ever happen
I do believe the signs on the western shore side roads have been removed too

What would all of the business along route 18 do if there was no traffic driving by their shops and fast food restaurants? I hear all the time the phrase " I'm a prisoner in my own home because of traffic". Has anyone heard of the Mixing Bowl, the Capital beltway, I-270, Route 4. now those are traffic nightmares. Traffic here is minor in my opinion. Route 8 and 18 is childs play!

Every time I see someone post about how horrible traffic will be on Rt 8 after a few hundred more houses are built I just laugh. There are 2 lane state roads that are carrying thousands of more cars a day without many issues. When on a daily basis people are sitting on rt 8 by bay city and it takes 3 or 4 cycles to get past bay city, then i'll agree that traffic is "horrible." But unless there is an accident traffic generally moves, and moves well.

The difference, though, is that in all those locations you mention, once you get to an exit you can make other choices about routes -- you have options. Here, especially on Rt. 8, you have no other way to get anywhere. If there is an accident on 50 and traffic backs up down 8, there is literally no other way out and you ARE a prisoner in your own home. It is fine most of the time, but incidents on 50 or on the bridge happen more and more often, it seems, and those are the times when you are completely stuck.

I can only guess that some of you haven't seen it bad. Sitting through 3 or 4 cycles isn't bad. 2 to 4 hours to get to the bridge or route 50 is when it's bad. there's no other routes or potions, no service roads that go anywhere.
Beltways and interstates are a different beast.

Exactly. When you live in Kentmorr and are unable to get back to Love Point Park to pick your child up from sports practice via rte 8 & are frantically trying to get in touch with a friend on 'that side' of 50 because of an accident on 50 or the Bay Bridge, it's unacceptable. The majority of roads mentioned earlier in this post amd other Interstates do not go right through towns but around them. It's not cycles of lights we have to sit through, it's wondering if the light cycle will even be an issue since we can't even get close enough to see the light?!
