Once again a school in QAC is eliminating an educational program specifically for students that are above average, or 'gifted'. To be honest, the enrichment programs are not the greatest, but it all that these students have. They spend their school days in classrooms where the material is being taught down. They are not challenged, they are bored, they end up being disciplined because they finish the classwork well ahead and of the majority and have nothing to do so they end up talking or creating a disturbance. One of my children's teachers actually tried to give him detention because he was not taking notes, because he already understood the lesson. The teacher was more concerned with the students that may have have noticed how easy the work came to him feeling badly about their ability in the class, possibly lowering their self esteem, than actually teaching my child. The enrichment program is not even grade specific, students from different grades are put in to the same class. These are the brightest students who watch their school and classrooms being tailored to every student other than them, except in this one enrichment class that does not even meet every day. These are our future leaders. PLEASE CONSIDER SIGNING THIS PETITION FOR THE SAKE OF THEIR FUTURES. These students are being left behind and it is time for that to change. www.change.org/p/keep-enrichment-programs-at-matapeake-middle-school

Sadly, education is not a priority with our government......thank the ones who voted for this......dont complain now..... 41% of the entire county spending for 2018 goes to the Board of Education. Nothing else even comes close to that percentage, and that spending increased over 2017 proportional to the overall county revenue. (And that doesn't take into consideration other educational spending such as the libaries, parks & rec, etc.) How much of our budget should go to education to be considered a priority?

Sadly thiis is not surprising, and absolutely wrong. The gifted students are minimized while schools bend over backwards to facilitate the educational, mental, emotional, physical, and social well being of special needs students. Both groups of students are in the minority within schools, both groups of students need more than standard instruction to maximize their abilities. Yet only one group is assured to receive whatever it is they need. Parents of gifted students need to band together and demand more. There is no shame in expecting schools to actually educate your child, it is not insensitive to advocate for equality in education if your child is a gifted student. Why should these students have to give up part of their summer and parents foot the bill for them to attend The Johns Hopkins 'Camps' for Gifted and Talented Students in order for them to be educated on their level? If any other group of students, from special needs to average ability, were abandoned as gifted students are it would be considered neglect and end up with a lawsuit demanding equal access, resources, funding and protection be provided these students in order to reach their full potential in school. I am amazed this has not happened yet. www.google.com/amp/s/www.bostonglobe.com/ideas/2014/03/15/the-poor-neglected-gifted-child/rJpv8G4oeawWBBvXVtZyFM/amp.html
