As the route 8 repaving project is finishing up, has anyone else noticed the paving below Batts neck is smooth and the paving above Batts Neck is coarse? Is this intentional? Were there two different contractors? It just seems odd to go from loud rough driving to a smooth surface as you pass Batts Neck, or is upper Rt 8 not completed? Anyone know?

Wouldn't "passed Batts Neck" and "before Batt's Neck" be better for location? "Down the Island passed Batt's Neck" is old time Islandize.

I guess it would depend on which direction you were traveling and where you live. I live in Kent Island estates and going past Batts Neck would be going North. In Bay City, going past Batts Neck would be going south. I am referring to Rt 8 north and south of Batts Neck. So north of Batts Neck is coarse while south of Batts neck is smooth.

Sounds like the county hired Slurry Paving for the area which you describe as "rough". That product absolutely SUCKS!!! They did a section of Bennett Point Road last year and it's horrible. They use different process than typical asphalt paving. What they do is, heat up the existing asphalt and try and smooth it out. So they aren't actually laying down new asphalt. They're simply retexturing the existing. They dont even roll it. It is ALWAYS rough when they are done. If you look at the pavement, you can still see the old crack sealing that was done previously. They should be banned from all paving projects, statewide!!

That is exactly what it looks like. I don't see any new asphalt on the road. The smooth section is clearly thicker.

Route 8 is a County Road, isn't it?? No it is a state maintained road to Romancoke. Remember the ferry was at Matapeake years ago and remained a state road even after the ferry stop running.
