Miller Says O'Malley Budget To Include 700 State Worker Layoffs
Maryland Senate President Mike Miller says 700 state workers would lose their jobs under the budget proposal being unveiled today by Governor Martin O'Malley. According to the "Baltimore Sun," Miller says the governor also plans to shift funds from a 366-million-dollar tax reserve fund, as well as the state's 700-million-dollar rainy day fund, as ways to close a one-point-nine-billion-dollar budget shortfall. Miller says O'Malley will not ask local governments to absorb teacher pension costs but a number of state agencies should expect to see budget cuts. Still uncertain is how much Maryland will benefit from a new federal stimulus package Congress is considering.

I say bring it, I work in the gov't and the excess manpower is absolutly rediculous.
The county I am in is starting to talk furloughs, While they still hire new people? -Including NEW managers positions with NO employees to manage? Still have an open door for overtime pay? Massive abuse by employees being called in for overtime? Spending has not been slashed, cut, or even curbed... 1 man, 1 van, for my whole dept. Workers still hiding part or all day, not doing their job.
I don't mind doing my part, not 1 bit. Just please, PLEASE do EVERYTHING else possible before doing it.

They say that 80% of the work is done by 20% of the employees. I wonder who they will choose to lay off?

My heart goes out to anyone who is facing possible loss of job, but I think most agree there is a lot of wasted energy at every place of employment..
But, with state gov't.. the one that drives me crazy is everytime we get a little hint of possible snow in the forecast, the state and local highway departments staging dump trucks with salt and driving around for three days dumping salt and other chemiclas on the road looking for slippery spots and when we do get a little dusting of snow the plows drive up and down the roads incessantly for three days plowing the dry pavement! And, by the way, many of those dump trucks loaded with salt and plowing the dry pavement are contracted!
Now I know that spreading of some of these chemicals is designed to prevent snow and ice from bonding to the road surface, but it sure seems to me there is excessive application. And, does anybody know what the cost is for these chemicals? Ten years ago rock salt was about $35 a ton. Magnesium Chloride was about 70 cents a gallon! Can you imagine how much of this stuff is spread on our roads during the three days they run around?
Every time this happens the wasted tax dollar counter in my brain starts spinning.. and concerns about runoff of chemicals into the bay..
Back to state govt layoffs, I know the state uses a lot of contract employees.. rumored to be cheaper than a full time position with benefits.. But, I would think all the contract positions should go before the full time employees..
Keep your fingers crossed the elitists downtown will eventually figure out the way to restore consumer confidence in this country and get the economy back on track is to regulate energy costs. We cannot have a stable economy when the price of gas goes up and down 20 cents a gallon in two days.
Best regards, BC

I feel bad for the workers, but really, most state jobs are there just to collect you money, whether it be taxes, fees, etc. We need police, education, roads, sewage and water... but think of all the jobs created just to take your money. Look at the tolls going up, for what? You won't see a reach the beach project again until another governor gets stuck in traffic. The people of Maryland pay way to much for the little services that we do get. Eliminate the DMV, there's a place where they torture you for hours sometimes, by giving you a number and asking you to wait until they call you to take your money. As governor, that would be the first place I'd shut down. I could probably win on that ticket.
