Olympian Phelps Photographed Allegedly Smoking Pot
(Metro) -- A slew of endorsement deals for Olympic champion Michael Phelps could be in trouble. A photograph of Phelps allegedly smoking marijuana out of a bong was published in the British tabloid "News of the World." The "New York Daily News" is citing "Star Magazine" as reporting the picture was snapped at a party at the University of South Carolina last fall. The 23-year-old Phelps won a record eight gold medals in swimming in the 2008 Summer Games in China.

I am so sorry to hear this. That young man had everything going for him. Would be nice if it was a phoney shot.....I hope so, for the sake of his bright future.

It is sad...some of the choices we made as young people. I did somethings as a young person that I am not proud of..and would never think of doing as an older adult. But heck...look at Marion Berry...got caught on tape buying and snorting cocaine..and he got re-elected...still boggles my mind. But it does show how people can forgive even the most rediculous and blatant of crimes. I think Phelps will be fine..things will blow over. But I hope he learns from this...he needs to know his every move from now on will be photographed...taped...recorded...its the price of fame...not that i am saying I agree with that..but that is how it is. At just 23, he's still a kid. He will do things like this. And because of who he is, anything he does will be in the public eye. The price of fame.

I am thinking who cares.
He's not the first nor the last,
and I doubt very seriously this will cause a loss in revenue for the companies that sponsor him....
(if nothing else, it may just bring in more revenue cause now the pot smokers can say their demographic is being represented!

Don't generally care about the pot smoking. DO care about the free pass because he's famous or the idea that 23 is too young to know better.

Agreed - 23 is definitely old enough to know better. I think it was his choice, but a stupid one. He knows he has a boat-load of endorsements that could be screwed up, so obviously he wasn't thinking. Personally, not that big of a deal in my mind. We've all done "stupid" things. But, he has his livelihood riding on this, so he'll have to live with the consequences of his decision. (Fr'instance, some parents may re-think taking their kid to the training facility he just bought in B-more, thinking that they may want more responsible folks training their kids?).

I think its really no big deal that he was hitting a bong with his friends. After all, he is a young guy and has devoted a lot of time and energy to training over the years to get to be the best at swimming in the Olympics and maybe just the best swimmer . . . period! He worked hard, really hard, won a bunch of Medals, more than anyone else, and now he is a celebrating a little! So what! Now he should have been a lot more careful and used better discretion, but what really sucks . . . is his assh@le friend who took the photograph and sold him out to the media!!!!! I hope Phelps kicks his @ss all the way around the block for that betrayal!
