ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A panel of Maryland legislators is scheduled to hold a hearing on a bill that would ban text messaging while driving. The House of Delegates Environmental Matters committee plans to review the proposal on Tuesday. Last year, that committee rejected similar efforts. Opponents have said the bills don't account for people who responsibly use cell phones while driving, and that driver distraction is caused by the conversations, not just holding a telephone. Opponents also point out that irresponsible cell phone use can already result in reckless driving charges. This year's measure is sponsored by Howard County Delegate Frank Turner. It would prohibit a person from using a text messaging device to write, send, or read a text message while operating a motor vehicle.

This is a wonderful idea, one less thing to impair our driving. However I know a lot of people, especially teens are still going to do it.

I don't see how texting while driving could ever qualify as "responsible cell phone use".

Common sense, I'd like to hear the argument against it.. should be a no brainer

Ok, I'll admit to having done it, but I'll also be the first to admit it's not a safe thing to do. (I consider myself a decent, safe driver, and I wouldn't have done it unless I was no where near anyone else. Still not a good excuse, tho').
That being said, I'd love to see texting while driving banned everywhere. BChevy said it, "common sense". Watching some people just talking on their cells while driving and KNOWING that they have no clue that there are any other cars around them is scary enough. It should be common sense not to text, but as the saying goes, "common sense isn't common".
