Answer to your questions. This is a very small club unlike Club One. I was thinking of joining but they ARE A LITTLE HIGH ON THE PRICE and no deals for the first 500 or Jan 1 sign up. They have a nice pool and very nice equip but very little equipment. It looks like you get charged for EVERYTHING after your basic membership. It's a shame it could be a real nice club. if you want small, clean and quiet this is your club. I need a little motivation. Looks like club one for me. By the way the fee's are around 48-58 per month plus membership fee to join. Anything else is extra. Just my own thoughts check it out for yourself.

I can only speak for my own preference - but I drove by the other day and could see right in - and there were just 2 "meat-head" looking guys standing in there. Not at all appealing. I'm intrigued by the pool - but not at all interested in working out in a small space with windows open to the street and "pumped up" guys hanging around. I'm still leaning towards Curves. Is it the only alternative to Club One? Didn't there used to be a gym in the Rainbow Plaza? We need a REAL gym that caters to women. Maybe I'll open one.

There is also "Island Athletic" right by Annie's Restaurant. I don't know much about it other than it's very big and like Club One, closes too early.

I used to go to island, in my own feelings it's a little dirty and the equipment is old and worn out. They are expanding but not upgrading the equipment. If you want a real club The Big Vanilla on the other side of the bridge. A Little far but real nice. Just my on two cents

Wow, I called Water's Edge with high hopes only to be completely let down. The services are WAY overpriced. My family just moved to the island from Montgomery Co. and our monthly dues (let me stress monthly) were half the price. These were all inclusive at one of the nations largest gyms Sport & Health. Better yet it was an open membership that could be used at any of their facilities nationwide! Now, Water's Edge also only accepts annual or semi annual memberships? ? No monthly? What if you move, change your mind, or just want to quit? These primitive obligations from the gyms of old are not in the best interest of the community and will only drive business away in the end. Looks like we will be going with one of the others!

That's a real shame. I live walking distance to there and am looking to join a gym. I'm still going to stop by this week, but that's bad news. For motivation purposes a close gym is key for me.

I stopped in and got a price list. They cost $48 a month for their fitness center and for both the fitness center and the pool it's $58 a month. The pool is really nice. It's a salt water heated pool that is nearly olympic size. The fitness center has all of the cardio cross trainer stuff, but the weights are limited. The only bad thing about the pool is that it isn't always open for everyone to use, so some planning would be needed. The big problem with this place is that the classes cost extra. It's $45 per class, which adds a lot to the bill. I don't know what Island Athletic costs, but Club 1 quoted me at $49 a month with free classes and showers / towels, etc. I would much rather go to the Stevensville gym over Club 1, but not for the difference in cost. Too bad because it's a nice place and I like the pool a lot.

I think that a big cost problem is that they don't have a great couples discount. It's 25% off, but it still brings membership to $110 a month for a couple, when Club One is about $80 a month. I'm with you - I live in Stevensville (Bay City) and am much closer to the new place and would prefer to go there, but not for such a large price difference.

I heard that Club one will be building a new location right by exit 41E. Should see it next year. They will have a pool from what I was told. They only charge $39.00. The owner said it might go up a dollar or two when the pool is built. Wish they would get it open fast. Water's Edge needs to give a special on the membership fee's at least until they have been open for a while. Most new clubs do. Either way I wish them luck and hope they do well, but for now I just joined Club One Sunday, for no membership fee to join.

I wrote "The Water's Edge" after I did some comparing of prices myself to let them know that their prices are a bit too high compared with Club One and to let them know of this forum. Here is their response:
Hi Rich,
Thanks for your email about The Water's Edge and for letting me know about your Forum.
I wanted to take a minute and clarify a couple things that I saw posted on the Forum and read in your email to me...First, I'm not sure how many of the people who are posting have actually visited our Facility. We are primarilly a Physical Therapy Center and decided to include a Fitness Center for transitioning therapy patients and the community at large. The Fitness Center is only a part of the overall operation at The Water's Edge, but is outfitted with some of the best equipment on the market - purchased in support of the demographics of our community. Our 55,000 gallon warm, warm pool is actually a "therapy" pool - meaning is it maintained at a temperature that is acceptable and conducive for therapeutic purposes. We use the pool primarilly for physical therapy, but because so many people enjoy the positive effects of warm water exercise, we decided to open our pool to the community as well by selling annual and semi-annual memberships.
We also offer aquatic classes, aquatic personal training and swimming lessons on all levels. Our pool is salt water treated and at 30 x 50 feet, not exactly cheap to operate as I'm sure you can imagine...
Our rates are slightly higher than Club One, that is true, however they are not $700.00 more per year...Our Run of The House Membership (with no discounts included) is $695.00 per year and we have not sold a Membership at that price as of today because everyone who has joined our Facility has qualified for some form of discount...We do not consider ourselves to be in competition with Club One or any other facility in the area, as we are not a "Fitness Center," and we certainly realize that not everyone will find our smaller, more up-scale facility as affordable...
We too, are offering a January Special...and it is available all month long - not just for one day...During January, we haved waived our Enrollment Fees entirely for all types of Membership. We plan to offer various specials each and every month and will begin posting them on our website (probably in February) along with our rates and fees. Lastly, it is only our Aquatic Classes that are priced the same for Members and non-Members. Land classes such as Aerobics and Yoga are offered at a 50% discount to all our Members.
Thanks again for your interest and please feel free to post this email on the Forum so that your readers will have a better understanding of how The Water's Edge operates. Please feel free to contact me any time if you have further questions.
Thanks, Beth Sanderson-Lacey Owner, The Water's Edge
There you have it. I hope that this clears a few things up for everyone.

Beth,
I think that the response you posted clarifies the current mis-conceptions about The Water's Edge. It's nice to see that we are a hot topic on the forum.
Thank you for your response : )

Rich,
Thanks for posting my email explaining the operational aspects of The Water's Edge. We are very excited to be opened and offering our services to the residents of Kent Island and the community at large.
As a side note, I am a native of the Eastern Shore and extremely proud of it! I've received a couple calls from people who, without knowing, have informed me that people "from the Eastern Shore will never put-up with a club that is structured like ours..."
I would ask that your readers look a little closer at our pricing and our facility. We have a number of "Corporate Members" who are now paying LOWER monthly fees than they were paying before at other "clubs" and if you factor in the Enrollment Fees of these same facilities (and divide them over a 12 month period) most people will find we are very competitive in this market...in many cases we are LESS expensive.
Ultimately, it is about individual preference. Our focus is on Wellness for everyone - not just the Members of our Fitness Center.
Please keep us posted and we will do the same!
Thanks Again!

The club is very, very clean. Like Beth said not for everybody. I kind of like it this way small and empty. If you join for a year it is $58.00 per month if you join for a quarter or half year it could be up to $78 for the run of the club. Little much. It should be the same whether it is by the quarter or year. Never less it is a nice place. They need to stop nickle and diming you though. If you join a week before the end of the month they will prorate you even one day. They should at least give it to you for free. What's a few days. This is why I did not join. I stopped by a few times to work it out but no go. I could see the future. Buck here Buck there. Nice people nice club but not for me even though I did like it to much $$$ for what you get.Hope they do well though. We need more people to take shots here.So if money is not a factor join you will like it.For me it is. If they would have given me the few days I asked for I would have joined. Penny foolish!

Bill, I agree with you it is a very nice club, no negatives at all. I would think when Four Seasons is up the club will be packed. All I meant was if you join mid month or even a few days before the end and you get a year membership they should at least give you the few days free. Ever single club I have been in does. Does it cost them anything? No. Question if they close for repairs or a holiday do the members get the one or two days pro-rated? They have a very nice club, great pool friendly staff. spotless what more can you ask for. Just give a little until you grow. I would have joined if not for the few days they wanted to charge me. It's just me not the club, that rubbed me wrong. Like I said I wish them well and all the happiness that the club will bring them. They have a nice place.

The old gym in Rainbow Plaza turned into Club One when they moved. I here the future site of the new Club One will be much larger and have a section more dedicated to women.

I would think it's enough about the club. If you are looking for rehab this is the one for you. The owners are great people to deal with. They care about the members and about them getting better. My best friend is a member and I have gone in as a guest several times. The place has always been spotless with more up scale people than the other. Just about every person I saw there was there for one reason, to work out and get better. This is not a pick up place or a place to hang around. It is a serious health club with one goal, helping people to get better. So enough said. Lets wish them well.
