I have heard alot of SLOW hot rod cars, I'm talking about v8s with loud exhaust that dont sound like they are moving too quickly but apparantly the owners think they really have something.I'm not talking about the ricers I have seen complaints about. It seems as soon as the weather breaks 50 deg, these guys are out trying their cars on the Rt8 dragaway at all hours of the night.I was driving on Rt8 south when I really took notice of all the black marks in the street starting at about Bats Neck. On the long straight away after the Elks lodge, I noticed more black marks int the NORTH bound lane heading SOUTH. Are these guys setting up drag races with one car going the wrong way? Has anyone else heard any of these racing idiots in the middle of the night? I would love to catch them in the act.

How can you tell what direction the black marks are heading? No criticism intended, I'm just curious what you see that tells the direction.

Drag Racing= at the strip Street Racing= on the street
It's a big difference, at least to those in the hobby, especially to the hard core drag racers.
I doubt that it's racing, it's just someon "lightin 'em up"
And what kind a race would they be going opposite ways?
Idiots? if they're doing it in the middle of the night- isn't that better than the middle of the day? Just an observation
and just what would YOU do if YOU caught them? I'm curious....
Falgar- you can tell, the marks get lighter towards the end they are going.
no it's not me.

Lighter end of tire marks would indicate direction. I also notice a lot of tire marks on the road that leads to the Goodhand Creek boat ramp. Lots of donuts being done there.

bchevy, I respect that you are a car enthusiast... but come on... no time is a good time to endanger other people on the roads.

Have the same problem on my end of Rt 8. Knuckleheads drive south, get to the Romancoke pier gate, turn around, squeal tires and try to get thru 5 gears before the firehouse.

I doubt very much it's motorists actually street racing but anything is possible. Most likely, it's a handful of knuckle heads power breaking and spinning their tires as they take off. The vehicle stops in the middle of roadway and lights the tires up. Either way, these actions are a danger to the other motorists and the vehicles can easily loose control and hit into a curb or run off the roadway.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the tire marks were from the police. One flew past me on Route 50 today, swerving in and out of traffic with no lights or siren, had to be doing 85 mph.

OK, Your right! Motorists must be street racing! Sorry for thinking it was unsafe to operate a vehicle like that on a public roadway. What was I thinking? I totally agree with outlaw! I'm sure most of the tire marks were made by the police. The police tend to drive like that when they are hungry and need to use the restroom. Since us cops love our donuts, why not burn a few into the pavement.

While I am a LEGAL drag racer (nationally) I will comment on the how do you know thing!I dont condone street racing, it is wrong and dangerous,rt8 is a poor selection due to the potential for accidents/property damage. There are two sets of black marks in the north and south bound lanes of route 8 south of the Elks BOTH heading south, drive by and look at it youself. It is not just some chump power braking! We used to race on the streets of Baltimore and DC for big money, it is very easy to spot when you know what it is. Seems like alot of guys who think their cars are fast are more frequently speeding up rt8

I live one block off Route-8 and every year in the spring and early summer, every Ya-hoo with a loud anything takes to Route 8. Old cars, rice burners, bikes, etc. I wish that there was a noise law that was actually enforced because it's just plain inconsiderate.

Actually there are noise laws however most officers have to be "educated" in the equipment law area of the Maryland Code and the Equipment Title of the Maryland Vehicle Law which most officers find too complex to enforce I guess. Suppose it's just easier to let the radar do the work and write a ticket. Seriously though I'm with you, unfortunately with the warm weather comes all kind of motorists with spring fever.

There's no STATE law for noise on cars. There's ONLY an inspection of the exhaust system to see that there is a muffler, cat.conv.(if req) and NO LEAKS. I got the ticket for loud exhaust, took it to the STATE INSPECTION STATION where it was promplty signed off as A-OK by the state inspector. There are SOME local noise ordinances, such as Ocean City, But not many.

This might help. MD Transportation Article 22-609: § 22-609. (a) A person may not modify the exhaust system or any other noise abatement device of a motor vehicle driven or to be driven on any highway in this State in such a way that the noise emitted by the vehicle exceeds that emitted by the vehicle as originally manufactured. (b) A person may not drive on any highway in this State a motor vehicle with an exhaust system or noise abatement device modified in a way prohibited by subsection (a) of this section. mlis.state.md.us/cgi-win/web_statutes.exe?gtr&22-609

Good find!
And there's NOT a Maryland State Inspection Station That I've seen with a noise meter, or a book that tells them what the factory sound level is.
Again there's no check for noise, just a solid non leaking exhaust system.
There's another classic example of a useless, unenforceable law, like herding your chickens up Main St. on Tuesdays

bchevy..........The state noise level is 65 decibels sustained for a period of time. I'm not sure, but I think it's 5 minutes. How do I know? My neighbors son played drums everyday for three hours while I was trying to sleep, and his parents were not at home. My eighty five year old father could not watch T.V. in his own home. The noise level toped out at 70 decibels, and averaged 63 decibels at our home which sits on a two acre lot. Another neighbor sold his house and moved to Pa. to escape the torture. When I complained these neighbors burglarized my home , and did $22,000.00 worth of vandalism to the house.....90 decibels will damage your hearing. The Police & Military use loud noise as an offensive weapon.... How much could you stand?

Hey Dingle: this was about VEHICLES, Doing Burnouts, or racing, or did you miss the topic AGAIN?
The noise laws on housing, IIRC are after a certain time of day?
Still- How many cops have a noise meter with them?
I'm not answering any of your questions until you answer mine, AND post your videos online.....

I like to sit out by rt 8 in a lawn chair and watch all this illegal street racing! The only problem I have is that all the cars on Kent Island seem so slow Does anyone around here have a car that will run a sub 9 second 1/4 mile time? ;D
