The son of one of my high school classmates was very seriously injured last weekend in a skateboarding accident near UMd. He has suffered a serious brain injury (lost consciousness upon impact, and has not regained). He is in a "watch and wait" state @ Washington Hospital Center. The good news is his youth (he is 20) and good physical condition. He suffered several fractures near the base of his skull (never a good thing), and they are dealing with the swelling that naturally occurred after the accident, as well as many other things, I am sure. This is info I've gathered from a "care page" site his mom is keeping. For those of you who are "pray-ers", if you could keep Matt in your prayers, and for those of you who do the "good thoughts", if you could send a few out for him, I would really appreciate it. I appreciate the good thoughts and prayers that were sent out for the Billotti-Woods family a few weeks ago, too, btw. Ya'll are really the best....

Thank you so much; I know I can count on my ES friends!!! I feel so badly for the family. Have known his dad since elementary school (a LONG time), and our daughter is the same age as Matt. Can't imagine what they are going through right now. According to the posts, he is responding to painful stimuli (good sign) but not to commands, and has begun to have periods of agitation that are relieved only by pain meds. It sounds very worrisome, so I appreciate anyone sending positive thoughts and/or prayers out. You guys are the best!

I will send positive thoughts/prayers...Brain injury's are so complicated...but if he is responding to painful stimuli...that is a very good thing...I hope he fully recovers. Barb

Thank you, everyone, and thank you Shorti for having Matt added to your prayer chain.
I am very concerned; the latest updates by his mom sound much more ominous this evening. Apparently, at first there was a lot of hope that his brain injury was one from which they anticipated he might make a good recovery. They have done a lumbar puncture today (aka, spinal tap) to rule out meningitis, among other things. I was concerned that this may be a possibility, because the descriptions given indicated Matt may have a basilar skull fracture (basically, a fracture at the lower back of the skull). Meningitis is a complication of these types of fractures, and when Matt's mom posted what seemed to be seizures, that seemed to indicate that something more worrisome may be going on. At any rate, I feel so for this family, and I greatly appreciate all of the positive thoughts and prayers that you are all sending out. I spent the day "up home" with my dad last night and today, and it just served to remind me what sort of plain, basically good and decent people I grew up around; I continue to pray that Richard and Patty will see good results in Matt's condition soon.
Thanks, everyone!!!
