My veterans organization is gettting ready to sponsor a Wounded Vet's Weekend. This is where we have as our guest several wounded soldiers from Walter Reed, come down to Kent Island for a weekend of fun, fishing, etc. We are looking to do this event in April or May.
I know that there are no guarantees with fishing....but what weekend would you consider might be the best for fishing. Actually we will only do fishing on Saturday morning and mabye Sunday morning before they have to return to WRAMC.
Also, who would you suggest I talk to about chartering a fishing boat, and are any handicap accessible (in case we have some wheelchair bound guests)....
Also, do we need to buy them fishing licenses as well? I have heard that in the State of Maryland, if the boat is licensed for fishing then those that are fishing do not have to be. Is this correct?
As the plans start to shape up, I will post more and more information as this is something I think Kent Islander's would love to get out and support in one way or another.
Right now tentative plans are Friday night, Social time; Saturday Fish until the afternoon, Saturday night big fish fry/banquet in the Veterans honor, where we hope to present them with some really nice fishing gear (rod, reel, tackle...etc) and whatever else the community would like to donate to the event...
Sunday morning either go out fishing again or have a meet and greet breakfast and then take them home Sunday night.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Especially community contacts.

Any boat you can charter for fishing should have a license that covers all passengers, and actually a lot of private boats have a similar license as well, just in case you can line up some private boat owners to volunteer.
I don't know if you intend for them to just catch & release stripers, or keep some for fine dining, but that may be a factor in your date choice. Last year striper fishing in the Bay was catch & release only until mid April.
Probably any of the local marinas such as Kentmorr can help with contacting charter captains. I believe there is also some sort of salthingyer fishermen's group that meets regularly at the Legion. They may be able to help you line up some private boat owners that may have an interest in volunteering, or help with contacting charter captains as well.
Good luck, and I think your work for veterans is great!!

Not sure what happened on the original post, but that last paragraph was supposed to say "salthingyer fishermen's group".

Trying again, that's "salt water". something on the board translates it to "salthingyer" when I try it as all one word!!!

The board has a bad-word filter. When you type that word without spaces there are four letters in the middle that the filter doesn't like. The filter isn't perfect.

This is the group I was thinking of earlier. I was wrong on the meeting place, it's the VFW rather than the Legion. I had seen this on the December calender for Kent Island Online.
Kent Island Fishing Club Meets first Wednesday of every month at the VFW Lodge off of Route 8 at 7:30PM Guest Speakers, Annual Picnic, Charter Fishing Trips, Monthly News Letters, Fish Stories and Tips! For more information: Contact Mason Shelby mshelby@atlanticbb.net or 410-604-3935

Thanks, there is a fishing club that meets at the legion as well, but I will be sure to contact this club for sure.
Thanks for the tip about the catch and release info, I hadn't even thought about that. I will certainly make it a priority before the end of February to get with the Fishing clubs . I am sure they will be my best resources for a lot of information.
