recently, i have begun to notice the changes at Chesapeake Outdoors. it seems that every time my buddies and i want to go fishing, they are out of bait, or are closed. in the last couple weeks, i have been there and have not been able to purchase any live bait. not even earthworms. also they close very early on sundays, and arent open on mondays. ever since they have become the only bait store on the island, they have lacked in service and i think its time for a change

i'm sure owning a local shop like that is tough. even more so in this tough economy and this time of year for fishing (the dog days of summer). most people probably shop at a big box store like walmart, bass pro shop, kmart or even on line and buy items cheaper than Ches Outdoors can. Its a shame too because those big box stores are not going to give you the local info you need to be successful. I'm sure the owner of Ches Outdoors is open as much as he thinks necessary to make his business work and have some semblance of a personal life. he's doing all of us a favor being there and i'm pretty sure he's not getting rich doing so.
Being out of bait is pretty inexcusable. you should always have bait. but then again everyone has bait...7/11, safeway, acme, and food lion. sorry, never heard of Lucky's tackle. and again, probably cheaper than Ches outdoors. he should prob just give bait away just to get more customers in there.
Now being closed on Sunday is excusable. when else can the owner either fish himself or enjoy time with his family. its got to be tough. Just imagine, the owner of Ches Outdoors is so committed, and passionate about his hobby of fishing and hunting he opened this store. now he has no time to enjoy the hobby he loves.
Maybe you, crabbyadam, can volunteer some of your free time so he can stay open later or enjoy his hobby more. and while your there, you can help him manage his bait inventory better and stock up for your fishing trips.

here's a perfect example. go look at the "Plugs" board. there is a thread asking people to shop historic stevensville before the local Kmart. all small businesses are hurting right now.
