Has anyone had any experience with houseboats--living, boating etc.?

Not really a whole lot Moosie, but have surveyed a few over the last few years that changed my outlook on the old "camper on the water" stigma.
A fella I know used to sell Gibson House boats at Pier One Marina, but I think he moved over to the Narrows by the Bridges restaurant. I think he is still selling but I have not talked to him in quite a while. Midlantic Marine INC.
Over the last several years, the house boat manufacturers have really made some nice boats. They are not just barges with campers on them. They have real v-hull design and twin diesel power if you like. And the room and luxury inside is excellent! A 50 foot Gibson 14 feet wide is like a luxury condo at the ocean. I can't help but compare them to another friends Pacific Seacraft Trawler.. which cost a fortune in comparison!! Yep, the trawler is really cool, but you are cramped with 4 people. You could have a party with 30 people in that Gibson!
If I ever get the time, money, and motivation I want to sail the ICW.. and from what I have seen a late model houseboat is the way I would go.
Best regards, BC

Thanks, bc. Must be the same guy we spoke with today, back behind fisherman's. Looked at a few gibsons. I can't help but wonder how they handle in open water. The "guest bedroom" leaves a lot to be desired in the headroom dept., but upstairs has so much light, and not bad space depending on floor plan. Love those decks! What we saw had gasoline engines. He did say that diesel did not pay unless you did a lot of cruising.
Any other info anyone might have would be appreciated. Are gibson's top of the line?

At the Kent Morr Marina, there is a very nice house boat/barge that someone rents out. I'm not sure if it's self propelled or has to be towed, it sure would be a nice thing to stay in.
