I generally don't cause a stir on here, but after tonight, I have to be scathing on something that happened to us. We were downtown and after having a good time at Castle Bay for a bit, decided to get a bite to eat. We were in the mood for something kind of fancy, so we chose Maria's. They sat us in the bar area since we didn't have reservations, which wasn't by far what I wanted, but oh well, ok. The appetizer that we got was a shrimp wrapped in bacon thing that was pretty good, and my meal was a fettuccine in a rose' sauce with scallops, shrimp, and crab. It was pretty good. My wife got veal medallions and that was beyond bad. Kind of like leather with lemon sauce, and she couldn't eat it. Since we were in the bar area, people were banging into us and someone reached over our table to pull a picture off of the wall right above us, knocking a bunch of Polaroids on the floor. We picked them up and put them back on the wall, but that was pretty lousy. While all of this was going on a woman walked into the bar area holding a screaming 1 year old (or so), and just stood there letting the child scream. My wife said to me "god, just take it home" too loudly (not intending on anyone but me hearing it), and the woman overheard and got mad. She came over to our table and held the screaming child in my wife's face and said " how do you like that". Great parenting... My wife was pretty irate at this point and called her an A$$ Hole, and then this 35 year old-ish bald guy came over and told us to leave. I asked him who he was and he said that he was the owner. It honestly took everything within me not to make even more of a spectacle, so we got up and left. If this was a family type place that had cheap food, we would gladly deal with it, but since Maria's dinners are all between $26-$35 a plate, ala carte, this isn't cool. I go out to eat a lot, and I can rattle off pretty much every restaurant in Annapolis and Kent Island and everyone knows us as good people that are fun and tip well. Maria's was the single worst experience that I have ever had. Not only was most of the food terrible, but the owner was an outright a$$hole. I strongly recommend that if you are in Annapolis you stay far away from Maria's. I know that I'll never set foot in that horrible place again. They also own "Mangia's" downtown. Sorry, but I'm really ticked off about this....

Amazing!
We have a fairly short list of businesses that will never get our money. That list just became a little longer.

It happens.
The shame of it is the managers actions! Obviousely clueless.
Everyplace has a bad night, Some of my favorite places have had them. At least with my fave's the good nights far out weigh the bad.

I agree that every place has an off night, but what I'm really ticked about is what the owners did. The woman with the screaming kid was the owners wife and the guy that told us to get out was the owner. I can deal with bad food and write it off as something like maybe the chef was out sick or something, but the owner's actions was not only unprofessional, but downright horrible. It takes a lot for me to complain about a place, so this was really bad. Being embarrassed in front of the restaurant by these nasty people was absolutely the worst thing that has ever happened to me at any public establishment, let alone a fancy restaurant. If this was ten years ago I probably would have made quite a scene and an example out of this guy. (although ten years ago I didn't have that kind of money to spend!). Luckilly I'm old and mellow now...

I hope I didn't sound like I was taking up for them, I wasn't trying to.
I missed the lady being the OWNER'S wife! OOF! that is bad!
Come on back over to the Island! Rams Head has their sign up!

I grew up with those guys and I wouldn't eat there either. The Italian place called Luna Blue on West Street across from the Ram's Head is really good and half the price. I go there alot and I highly recommend them. They started out at Squsito back when that place was good.

I can't think of the name of the place, but it's an Italian restaurant on Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park and it is much better than anything downtown. It's on the left side of the hwy as you go by where Woodfire and Annapolis Seafood is. Places like Maria's live off the tourists and Academy parents, so all they have to be is mediocre since it's not repeat business. It's kind of like any of the places at the beach that are right where the tourists are.

A year or more ago I got a part-time job at Maria's through a friend... I was asked to hostess. I stood at the front door in front of the bar. There was a light above my head from the bar. The same manager (with the bald head) remarked to the servers: "She looks like a giant turkey underneath a heat lamp" and then turned the light off. I kindly finished up my first shift and never returned. He is the biggest A-HOLE I have ever met. It is Maria's son.

wow...I just read this for the first time
If you are going to be in a service oriented business then by God you had better be providing a good service. That guy sucks, I am almost tempted to walk in there and say OH Wait this is that place that everyone is complaining about,I am not eating here!

The family that owns Maria's are horrible people. I worked there many moons ago when it was just a pizza joint, when Maria was there every night. One of her sons would actually freebase in the bathroom on his breaks. Maria actually slapped me across the face once when she thought I was covering for another waitress that had stolen money out of the register (I wasn't). Plus she had no qualms about screaming at us in front of our tables and constantly telling us how stupid Americans are. Good times...

I can't quite figure out the guy at La Piazza. Most of the time he yells at me he totally reminds me of the Soup Nazzi!! But then sometimes he flirts with me, but it is still with that weird, 'I hate you look'! I wonder if it is just his demeanor?

First of all you have to understand Frank to know how to take him. He does not hate Americans Hes MARRIED to one. I should know, I'm his stepdaughter that works in La Piazza 6 days a week and knows when he is actually yelling and when he just seems to be yelling. He is a very LOUD talker, beleive you me. Alot of people do not know how to take him, your not the only one. So if you don't like the ASS BAG don't EAT THERE, theres plenty of other places around to eat.

This guy sounds so much the little Italiano dude behind the counter at the Sligo Deli in Silver Spring. Loud yelling all the time (not mean yelling, just 'directing traffic' among the staff) I come from an Italian family and know how it works. If it is, I gotta go there.

I know Frank at LaPiazza, he is very good to his customers. I've seen him give food to people if they didn't have enough money. AND....he does not hate americans. Greensboro Mike you must be one of those filthy workers that come in there all dirty. Thats probably why he yells at you, NO RESPECT.....

See the thing is, bchevy, we have been there for 10 years now and I don't think telling 1 person to go eat somewhere else is gonna hurt, we are a well known place, to be honest My dad has kicked people out for the disrespect, like on here. Just saying if you don't like a place why eat there? Some people just need to learn how a true Italian is. And not saying you have to work there to know, just talk to them, you might get alot further then this childish mess. Confront the problem, if that is you have a problem, don't hide behind a screen name on the internet. Come in and tell us about it, im sure he would love to listen.
