aka.....the drainage ditch. My property is on the corner of two county roads, with my house sitting back in the woods. Here's a pic of the ditch showing my driveway along the one road. It's like a forest in there now, it hasn't been mowed since 2010....there's saplings that are 1 1/2", going on 2' inches in there. It drops of quickly and is too steep to cut with my tractor, but I do mow the edge for access to my mailbox and visibility getting out of the driveway. The county crews use to mow the front, middle and back sides.....now nothing. I've called the county, I've emailed the county, I've sent pictures to the county....what am I supposed to do, go up there and be irate with them? I shouldn't have to do that. I also shouldn't have to maintain it, it's beyond the equipment I have. It's getting close to the point that I may need to pay someone with a bushwhacker to clean it up, because I'm concerned if a tropical storm or something comes through and drops a lot of water...where's it all going to go? Rant over Attachments:

Thank your friends here ranting for "budget cuts" the last few years. They helped you out with this one.

Thank your friends here ranting for "budget cuts" the last few years. They helped you out with this one. I'm still paying as much or more in property tax, income tax, sales tax, vehicle registration, fishing license, ramp fees, etc. I imagine mj and the rest of QAC can say the same. Our payments have not decreased but the services we receive certainly have. Put another way: The services I receive have been cut but my payments have not. When I and mj start receiving services for the money we have been paying for all these years, THEN I might stop calling for budget cuts.

Revenues, based on property values have gone down. Therefore, the money coming into county coffers has been reduced. You can't do more with less. Just doesn't work that way. You claim that what you pay is the same. I don't buy it. Your property value has more than likely been reduced. Mine certainly has. If you want the same services when property taxes revenue has gone down, you're going to need to pay for it. (And let's not confuse the issue with taxes that don't affect local income taxes). So once again, those who have asked for budget cuts are getting what they asked for. No one to cut the many drainage ditches around the county. Thanks for that. ( I maintain the ditches on my property myself) FWIW.

You'll want to check your facts. The QAC budget increased $6M from FY11 to FY12 and is projected to increase another $1M in FY13. Property tax revenue will be down $400K in FY13 but that is after a $5M increase in FY12. But property tax revenue has not gone down this year, it has increased significantly. I'm not sure what you are trying to say about local income taxes but the rate I pay in QAC income tax has increased this year too. Except for the fact that the budget has increased, not decreased.

Well, yeah, you can. Maybe 2 man pothole crews instead of 6. Have the driver get out and grab a shovel or a tamper? Maybe they don't have a driver sitting in the truck carrying the porta potty for the grass cutting crews, instead having the truck drive up a ways and the driver get out and "gasp" whack some weeds?
You CAN, however, do less with more.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say about local income taxes but the rate I pay in QAC income tax has increased this year too. Sorry about your luck. My property taxes have DECREASED by nearly half from 09 - 10 to 2011. Given that the assessments have dropped this much across the board in the County money has to come from somewhere.

I'm not sure where you live tom. My property value is down significantly, but the county has raised the rate per thousand so the amount I pay has increased. Congrats to you if you're in better shape than you were years ago.

I'm going to guess that the difference in tomc paying less and frank paying more is that frank has lived in house a long time and is paying the county rate against a lower "homestead tax" valuation. In that case, if the county rate stays the same (which it did this year) the homestead tax value can increase 5% each year - so the tax owed would still go up even though rate stayed the same.
If tomc bought his house at the height of the market (or if it is not his principal residence) and was paying the county rate against that high value - and then his valuation actually went down - the tax he owed would also go down.

Not exactly true honeybee. tomc may have bought his house at the height of the market, but as his value decreased, the county raised the rate to insure they had the required income to maintain the same service levels.

For 2012 tax year they kept the same rate as 2011. The county did raise the rate last year for 2011 tax bills (from .7671 in 2010 to .8471 in 2011). This was particularly bad news for Kent Island because we were the last area of the county to get reassessed since property values tanked. Kent Island was reassessed for 2012 tax year and they actually kept the rate the same as last year (.8471). So on Kent Island, some people paying the tax rate on a full assessment would have their actual bill go done due to lower assessment. But people already paying on a lower homestead value would have that homestead value increase 5%.

If your property is on a county road, your property is set back from the road, usually on your side of the drainage ditch....about 12 feet. There are exceptions.
