Route 305 just north of Centreville was shut down earlier - someone who walked away from the pre-release center was armed and on the loose. He was spotted by police and shot in a field near a farm on 305. Police are all oK - sounds like the suspect was killed - gunshot wound to the head.

Apparently a message was sent out by the County to local residents but was cut off: "A Blackboard Connect message was sent earlier to notify residents in the area of the Eastern Pre-Release center of a walkoff. We are aware the message was cut off and are working to prevent this from happening again. "

I'm stuck on the "walk away" part. He didn't run?

"Maryland State Police and Department of Corrections issued an alert about 5:50 p.m. saying a 25-year-old man who was serving time for assault had walked off from the Eastern Pre-Release Unit in Church Hill.
The Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office responded to a call for a burglary on Carvell Farm Lane at 6:08 p.m.
The homeowner reported a blue bag and a 9 mm handgun with an extra magazine missing.
A short time later, a deputy spotted a man walking along Route 301 with a blue bag.
Troopers and deputies converged on the man at mile marker 95, which is between the Bay Area Welcome Center and state Route 305. The man went down into the ditch and came up firing, police said. Police exchanged fire and the man ran across the field to a farmhouse on Tanyard Road, where he was confronted by the farmer. Police said he did not shoot at the farmer.
A Centreville police officer came down the farm lane and confronted the suspect. The officer shot and killed the suspect, police said."

In less than 18 minutes he found a gun? Sounds fishy.

The story released has lots of holes in it, they left out the part where a trooper stopped the dude for walking on 301 and let him go, of course this wasn't his fault. They didn't put the broadcast out yet. They also left out the troopers in a gun fight with him using a rifle.

QAC Sheriff's office FB page has an updated more lengthy report. Stated that after they first exchanged gunfire, suspect ran across field to a farmer's house where the armed homeowner confronted him as he exited the field. That's when Centreville PD came. Still no word about a rifle yet but I'm sure more will come out.

Lets hope the homeowner is charged with unsafely storing his weapons and ammo. Nice way to try to get a cop killed...

I don't believe details were released as to how it was stored - so that's a stretch. Let's keep the blame where it belongs - on the criminal. I'm glad the farmer had his weapon safely stored - in his hand...

Why was this guy housed in Pre-Release and worried about going back to jail? That's what I don't get - isn't this a work release facility?

Beautiful Frank! Reminds me of the time a friend who was a Baltimore City police Detective told me that conventional wisdom among the criminal element in and around the metro area was to NEVER go across the bridge and do any crime. All those Rednecks over there have guns and big dogs!
