Aside from your family masoleum being vandalized, which is disrespectful but sadly commonplace, what was so offensive throughout these posts? Obviously it is not my family being discussed, but it appears to be questions first about the property and structures, and then about your family's history? Speculation that your relative died in a mudslide while constructing the Bay Bridge is just that, speculation. Confusion over the masoleum being built before your mother's death is just curiosity. Neither seem mean spirited; the only post I can relate to making you feel offended is from someone who claims their widowed mother was evicted by one of your relatives. Then again, if that is the truth so be it. Each of you have undoubtedly heard different recollections of that incident, if any. No matter where anybody is buried tales of haunting surround the location. It goes hand in hand with death. It is commonplace and not attached only to your family's masoleum. Perhaps possibly you were taken aback at finding out that your mother's resting place was vandalized. Completely understood by anyone. However, chastising individuals who currently live in the area developed by your family who are curious as to the history of their hometown, and by default your family, is miguided. Those you may want to take issue with are the ones defaulting on the promise of perpetual care. You may want to think about being honored that anyone even cares enough about your family to be curious and seek out historical facts. Not many people have the ability to claim their ancestors had a huge part in developing a community as lovely as the Kent Island area. You happened upon an opportunity to educate other's that are interested in your family history. How in the world is it offensive?

Does anyone know the back story on the big mausoleum back at the end of Castle Marina RD with one person interned? Seems very out of place for the size of it.

Yes it was built for Edie daughter of William and Edith Bittorf who died very young of cancer. When lands were bought by present developer they signed a duly legal document which stated to put in place a Perpetual Care for the structure. It is in this duly executed document. Decades have passed and they have failed to maintain grounds..torn up flower beds ..destroyed well...kept family locked out...failed and refused to maintain. The father died and now his heirs decides not to live up to his father's legally executed contractual agreement? Sadly this has not been resolved as the son James H. Bittorf just passed March 29th. Due to this conflict will not be buried with his parents and sister which was his wishes. We received a picture of thier intent to move the three from final resting place into a building of inferior design and materials without even a Christian cross or perpetual care. They do not have family permission to move the location. Received this intent on March 30 the day after James Bittorf's death on March 29th from an attorney in Cambridge. The duly executed document did allow for an approved design change but again they fail to comply. This building will require up keep. Once this Developer is long gone wiil become the concerns of community without Perpetual care in place.

There is duly legal documentfor Developer to submit for approval the right to change design of Bittorf family mausoleum. Final resting place solely family and decendants negotiate at time of sale put in legal document. Local Funeral Director worked with William Henry Bittorf to build this mausoleum. This same funeral director placed all three remains in the structure. Mr. Bittorf's daughter final wishes to her father for her family members all together with her.

It does seem out of place today but not in 1984. It once had gardens and trees well maintained on the farm...over looking the airstrip. Mr. Bittorf was pilot..Instructor number was 29. One of the first Instructor pilots with many other famous people after the War . Receipant of Air Cross for sinking a German Submarine off our coast with only his landing gear as a weapon. I remember when this air strip area had very different use. Many don't know the connection between Benton and Davidson farm...Mr. Davidson was born in that house...

Mr. Bittorf developed Benton's Pleasure and paid for the sewer line on Cox Neck Road to serve it. Mike Sipes was the Contractor and I was the County Inspector. His son Jimmy developed Martingham in St. Michaels. I remember Jimmy working in the ditch wearing slacks and expensive leather shoes. The Bittorfs were great folks. I believe Mr. Bitttorf was killed on Rt. 50 at the foot of the new bridge. I don't remember if it was from the crash or a heart attack.

It was because of the Bittorf family that our family moved to Kent Island in 1967. My daddy, John Talley did alot of work for Mr. Bittorf: doing the body work and painting used cars for him to sell. They knew one another when they were young in Baltimore, possibly going back to the 1930's. My daddy's shop was behind the Western Auto. We lived in a house that Mr Bittorf owned, and rented to us, the old original house in the Harbor View development. Some old timers here might remember this. There was a beautiful marshland between the house and Cox Creek that was allowed to be filled in and a housing development built there. The Bittorf family made alot of money "developing" Kent Island and many would say that it wasn't for the better. My daddy dropped dead at work from a heart attack. Mr. Bittorf's son came to our house 3 days after he died and told my mom that we could buy the house or move in 30 days. That was impossible because she didn't work nor did she even drive a car. This is the kind of person he was. Alot of folks get their status and reputation because they make alot of money but how they make their money isn't always known.

I remember John and your mother quite well. I remember them in Baltimore before he came to Kent Island to set up his body shop on Eastern shore. Yes your mother called eldest son about being told to move after John's death. Who was also friends of Bob. It was immediately straighten out with the father who had no idea that it was the brother in law who wanted to move into your home. Interesting the truth is it not?
