The Associated Press
ANNAPOLIS, Md. —
State Sen. E.J. Pipkin, who led Maryland's strongly outnumbered Republicans in the Senate, announced Monday he is resigning to pursue a master's degree in sports management at Southern Methodist University in Texas.
The Senate minority leader said in a telephone interview that his resignation will be effective next week, when he plans to enroll at the school in Dallas. Pipkin, whose district includes the Upper Eastern Shore, said he felt it was time to make a career change.
"It's an interesting risk, but it's time," Pipkin said.
Pipkin has been a state senator since 2003. He has served as minority leader since 2011. In that role, he has been a steadfast and fluid debater for the GOP in the Senate, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 35-12.
In recent years, Pipkin has denounced what he described as a policy war on rural Maryland. Pipkin led the debate in the Senate against Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley's gun-control measure this year. He also was a regular critic of tax increases that have been approved during O'Malley's tenure.

Can you blame him. Only person more of a socialist then Obama is O'Malley and his state assembly cronies. At some point you have to question why you are banging your head against the wall over and over again.

The Eastern Shore will miss him. Let's hope we don't get an O"Malley follower. O'Malley is bad for everything, god forbid he runs for President and wins. Then it's time to leave the US.

Took people's money and votes and then doesn't finish the job he campaigned for. What a stand-up move.

That sucks.
+1 on hoping we get someone similar to him, but I doubt they'll get any further than he did with MD politics. They are firmly in power, they know it, and they don't care what we think. They're going to keep doing what they want to do.

Let the rumor mill roll.. Hate to see him go but I sure can understand. After a while you just get tired of trying to reason with brain damaged people.. :/

At some point you get tired of beating a dead horse and find a new one to ride.

What in the world in a wealthy state senator who made a fortune in investment banking doing resigning to pursue a master's degree in sports management??? Does anyone else find this a tad bit insane! None of it makes any sense. I always liked EJ but I'm having trouble coming up with anything nice to say after he abandoned his constituents like this for a mid-life crisis of sorts.

I have to think that there is more to this than we are being told. It makes no sense that Sen. Pipkin would just pack up his tents and run away to Texas. Texas??? Masters in Sports Management??? Hmmmm....does not sound right. Sounds like a really fast escape. I guess it will all come out in the end. Not much thought or concern for his voters.

It gets to a point in some peoples lives that they have enough and get tired of the fight and just say enough. Can't blame the name. He gets health care and a nice pension.

It's disappointing to up and leave this way. Finish your term like you were voted in to do. Your college degree will be waiting when you're finished here.

At some point you gotta say enough's enough and do something for yourself. I'd love to quit my job and go be a cowboy, or a pirate, or a race car driver. Doubt it's going to happen, but I got a powerball ticket in my pocket.

A pirate....ok, that makes me chuckle. So, what kind? One of those that goes out marauding on the high seas or more like one of those retired guys that moves to KW, grows a beard, wears a bandana on his head and starts drinking at 10am? Why isn't there a pirate smiley!
