I'm not totally sure, but doesn't a Catastrophic Plan qualify for Obamacare?

We currently have a great healthcare system. One of the things that scares me about a government takeover of our healthcare is stuff like this: We do. If you have insurance. Especially if you have good insurance. However if you have no insurance its not all that great. Not sure about the "government takeover" part. I highly doubt in 2 years you're going to see MD Primary Care turn into Federal Government primary care. Anne Arundel Federal Government Medical Center. The President has repeatedly said that he prefers a Single Payer plan. Here is a Wikipedia description of Single Payer: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-payer_health_careIf the exchanges fail because of the bureaucracy, then we will go to a government plan like Medicare or Medicaid. I doubt as a EMS worker you deal with doctors that are not part of a big group. If you do, talk to a physician who is aware of the reimbursement rates of Medicare and Medicaid you will see what I am talking about. I had tests done at the main Hopkins in Baltimore and the technicians were already complaining about the changes required by the new law. I suspect you trust the government will always do the right thing but I don't, so we will never agree.

As each day goes by, you just have to wonder about the pick and choose from congress on what needs to be funded today...it's utter madness.

I feel for all the federal government employees who are now on furlough. Please remember to vote Andy Harris out of office next November. He voted to quit paying you meanwhile, he is still getting his. Wait, Wait, Wait, Backup to this first post. Feel sorry for the Federal employees? What? Really? You obviously have always had your way paid by the government and never had to try and make it on your own like all us contractors and small business folk that don’t get any government support. All we do is work and pay taxes! And guess what we do when there is no money and our business is struggling? We still work! And we work harder to find some money to make it. Our employees still show up because they have work ethic, they believe in their jobs and their company, and have full faith that the company will make it and get paid. Now they are talking about giving money back to all the Federal employees that sat home and did nothing? Really? What did they earn? The National Parks were still there, the Monuments were still there, it wasn’t like the trees stopped growing at the parks or the Monuments stopped honoring our vets. They could have still shown up if they truly believe in their jobs and especially the US Government. People are mad at Congress, I am more mad about the people that just walked away from their responsibilities when they know that they still have a job, they know that this will be worked out, and they are still receiving their benefits.

And you obviously have no idea what you are writing about. The Federal employees who are at work during the furlough have no guarantee that they will ever be paid and at the very least will not be paid until after the furlough is over. These people are going to work to keep the business running. The Federal employees who are not working during the furlough are sitting at home at the direction of their employer. If they chose to go to the office they would be turned away. If they persisted they would likely be terminated and possibly prosecuted for trespassing. This is not what they have chosen and is completely out of their hands. Back pay for those who are working is absolutely the right thing to do. Back pay for those who are not working is arguably still the right thing to do. When the Govt. shuts down for a snow day and the employees are told to stay home they still get paid. When the Govt. shuts down for a National Day of Mourning and the employees are told to stay home they still get paid. When the Govt. shuts down for a furlough and the employees are told to stay home it seems like they should still get paid then also.

When the Govt. shuts down for a furlough and the employees are told to stay home it seems like they should still get paid then also. These people are actually pawns in this situation. Shutting down the Govt. in the first place wasn't really personal. No one pointed to the Federal employees and said, "do what I want or I'm going to hurt these people." However, that has now changed. The House, in a bipartisan decision, passed a bill to provide back pay and sent it to the Senate, effectively challenging the Senate. This puts the Senate in a difficult position: They can continue to vote down everything the House sends over, but to do so directly and personally affects the Govt. employees. The Federal employees who are out of work didn't choose this situation and now they see the House and Senate (who chose to adjourn before taking up the House bill) using their jobs and pay to make political points. I feel bad for these employees too.

....and here is why you would never make it in "the real world". Snow day? Private businesses and store owners still find a way to make it to work to make a living. National Day of Mourning? How does that pay the bills when my business is closed? They need to be thankful for the luxury of getting paid for not working and stop the pity party already and use it as a political tool. The rest of us that have to work and open our stores everyday to actually earn our own way don't share the same empathy that you do.
The statements that you made and what we see in the media everyday are why us business owners have seen a shift over the years to a generation of employees that don't have the same accountability and responsibility standards and have turn more towards to thinking they are entitled to everything. That mindset works only in government which is why that model is failing but the stock market is at record levels. See the correlation?

OK, here's a scenario: A business is forced to lay off, say, 800,000 workers. The reason does not matter and the employees had ample warning that the layoffs could happen (months). These employees ARE eligible for unemployment benefits, which are max about $430.00 a week in Maryland. As with most layoffs, there is no definitive end.
Now the "Board of Directors", elected by the shareholders of the company, has voted to give the employees retroactive pay after the layoff ends, thereby making the unemployment claims unnecessary. They just have to be able to stick it out for however long the layoff lasts and the company can get back on it's feet. The "dirty little secret" of the retroactive payback is that the cost of the back pay will be borne by customers who did NOT receive the services they are being forced to pay for. And this company CAN force their customers to pay for this back pay, with no recourse. Remember, there was ample warning to the employees that the layoffs could happen, so they should have had time to prepare for the possibility of extended unemployment, (this company did this for over 3 weeks 17 years ago) ultimately turning the layoff into an extended paid vacation. And yet this company is crazy in debt, is about to have it's note called in and it's only solution to this is to go get another line of credit.
What private company in the world could possibly do this to it's customers (shareholders) and have any hope of surviving?

A couple things to consider:
The DC Metro area economy relies heavily on Government business. Anybody who gets laid off, even Gov't employees, loses any confidence they ever had their job is secure, resulting in tightening of the belt.. and lack of spending. The loss of good will and employee loyalty to the job cannot be measured.
In the metro area, retail sales have already shown the effect of government employees staying home and not spending money.
How do you think the lunch businesses are doing? Especially those favorite lunch places around major Government installations.
How about the gas stations (I have seen a small decrease in the price of gas the last few days, think there might be a connection)
Lack of sales results in decreased tax revenue for state and local jurisdictions.
The short story is shutting down the government does not just hurt the govt employees.. it hurts virtually every business in the metro area, not just gas stations and lunch counters, but the many thousand contract employees the government hires. They are sitting at home too..
Giving furloughed govt employees back pay is critical to restoring the area's economic well being.

…so let me get this straight with your line of thinking… When the gov’t employees go back to work, let’s say three weeks from now. They will get all their back pay for work that they did not earn since they were home and spending money as if they were not off work since guess what? They know they will get paid!
So when they go back to work, do you think they will eat three weeks of breakfasts and lunches to earn the private businesses around the Metro area their back pay for the gov’t employees being off? No!
Do you think they will buy three weeks of gas at the local gas stations while being off? No!
Who benefits here? You keeping score? I don’t see the gov’t employees getting hurt, I just see the small businesses getting hurt and no one is running news stories about them. Government looks out for government and no one looks out for us (small business and industry) but us.

My guess is most people on this forum are either essential, non essential or retired fed, state or some type of government employee and just wouldn't understand. At the moment they are pushing their children, grand children and inlaws to get some type of government job.

Perhaps you have some misconceptions about federal employees. I was a government contractor for 20 years. I worked hard and worked long hours. I got to travel all over the country, expense account, company car, etc. I made a ton of money. Eventually, my wife and family got tired on me being gone all the time. I switched over to the government side almost eight years ago after hearing about all the wonders of a government job. It's not exactly what I expected, although I'm not complaining. I am an at-will employee which means my job can be eliminated at any time. Not like the old government employees where you could coast through your career once you wre hired. I have good health insurance and benefits, but I also make a lot less money than I did as a contractor. A lot! I knew this when I took the job, but didn't realize I would also be a political pawn when the administration decides that government employees don't get a raise for the next three years to save money; nothing, zero. The price of gasoline has doubled over the last four years, food is going through the roof, and my pay remains stagnant. I now work a part-time job on Saturdays to make up the difference. The next kick in the a$$ was to furlough government employees. Some agencies employees were furloughed a day a week. Thats a 20% reduction in pay. The mortgage was not reduced 20%, nor was the gas for the car, or food to feed the family. Again, I did not take this job to become rich, only to provide stability for my family. I've never been off for a national day of mourning. On 'Snow days' I am expected to be at work. However, non-essential employees can stay home during a snow emergency, but they have to use their vacation time on their paycheck to make up the time. No free rides. As an essential employee, I am required to be at work every day during this government shutdown without receiving a paycheck because our payroll department has been furloughed. This Thursday starts hot rod week in Ocean City and my pre-approved vacation has been cancelled due to the shutdown. Again, no complaints because I have this 'cushy' goverment job.

Just one more "myth".. if you don't walk in the shoes, it is hard to understand.
No one can deny that some government jobs and workers are .. are.. well shall we say expendable? But at the same time can we not say that many private sector employees and jobs not only expendable, but downright stupid and annoying to customers?
Many career government employees really do give a crap about what they do. And many of those same employees have given up a lot in pay and benefits by staying with the government.
Hard as it is to accept, paying govt employees for lost work is the right thing to do.. and lets not forget that only the House has passed a bill for back pay, the Democrat controlled Senate has not.

No one forced them to open their own businesses, just as no one forced Fed's to work for the government; to put blame on Federal employees, other than the idiot politicians, for the problems we face is ridiculous. Was forwarded a notice this morning that furloughed Federal employees using government resources, ie., blackberry's to access their work e-mail, can be charged with a criminal offense. And Freefallin' wants to moan about fed employees not responding to their job responsibilities; they would if they could.

I had the impression you had disdain for the government as an entity, but you seem to have the same general disdain toward the employee's too. Do you not have a single friend, relative or neighbor you like that works for the government? I find that hard to believe living in an area with such a high concentration of government employees as the D.C. metro zone....which we are a part of. If you didn't realize it.....real people work there that are honest and hardworking, they have families, kids, mortgages like the rest of us and some of them I know are growing a little worried about paying upcoming bills, especially mortgages, if this thing drags out longer without getting a paycheck. Also, these very same employees that you hold this negative apathy toward spend money around here. You're a small business owner of some sort, good for you, you can control your own future and destiny. But I wonder....when people are seeking your services, do you screen them and then turn down their dollars when you find out they work for the governemnt? Hopefully you do, you would truly be holding to your convictions...but I doubt that's the case. One other thing...the House, that forced the shutdown in the first place, just passed the spending bill to back pay all the government employees. Call or write your U.S. House Representative that voted for it, be mad at them, not the government employees. No one walked off the job, if they were non-essential, they were told to not come to work.

There is no "fuzzy math", if this mess continues those furloughed will have the opportunity to collect unemployment.
If you voted in the last elections, chances are real good YOU voted in one of the useless turds you refer to - don't be so quick to point fingers.

I can't speak for D, but most of the useless turds I voted for, lost... especially the bigger ones. They're all turds, out for themselves and we just seem to get in the way. If they are going to get paid when this is over, they need to be put back to work. No paid furloughs, isn't that an oxymoron? Did my 2 years with 12 furloughs in each year, haven't been paid yet, not looking for it, and not crying about it. I've never understood living paycheck to paycheck and I guess I will never get it. If you can't afford it don't buy it. That way has done well for me.

I have kept my mouth shut, for the most part, but I cringe at all the "idiotic uninformed posters" who have their panties in a wad over whether or not the furloughed government workers get their back pay. Screw you. Obviously you are still getting a paycheck. Obviously you have no concerns whether or not your bills are going to be paid, whether or not you are going to lose your house, whether or not you credit score is going to get jacked because you have no money coming in to pay the bills. I am so sick and tired of hearing how government employees do nothing but get a fat paycheck and rip off the government . SCREW YOU. I work hard for my paycheck. So do the majority of my peers. I see more lazy fat useless people in the private sector. I pay taxes just the same as you, probably more..... I was told not to come in, not to check my blackberry or try to even volunteer or face termination.. Yea, cushy freaking job huh? Meanwhile I am at home, not sitting on my butt, not whining about my situation but working on a solution. Have I applied for unemployment. No. Am I going to, don't know, probably not, but I know with out a doubt I deserve unemployment far more than all those worthless individuals out their raping this government with false claims and so forth. So you unless you have walked a mile in my shoes, you should just shut your mouth and go sit in the corner and color.
Any one voting in an incumbent is a fool and you deserve what you get. The shut down was unnecessary, both sides are to blame. We have let these stupid people hold the American public as hostage. We outnumber them, apparently the whole country is pissed, but just you watch come election time these idiots will be re elected by the majority of you that would rather sit on your fat butt and complain then get off your couch and do something about it.
Guess what if your privately owned business goes under during this time, I don't give a darn, you know why? Cause most likely my hard earned dollars were spent supporting your business... But I have nothing to spend and neither does a lot of other people. But you can be assured, once I do go back to work, I probably will make it a point to never step foot in your business again, because of your idiotic posts.
Now my post may be just as idiotic as the rest of them out there, but I am angry, deservdedly so, and to hear non government people talk about government workers like we are pieces of crap... well SCREW YOU.... Obviously your the POS.

AMEN!! I too was one of those lazy overpaid govies. Retired now. When I hear someone say how cushy we have it and that we should go out and get a real job, my blood boils also. Hmmm, worked 35 years at jobs that I would probably get paid more for doing in the outside world. Got accused of getting free ride on health insurance (nope..we paid top dollar for our group plan) got accused of plush retirement...nope, each paycheck I paid in over 7% into my retirement plan...put in many hours with no pay just to get the job done (mainly due the extreme budget cuts so not enough people to get the work done) Not complaining, just stating how it was. I was proud to serve as a civil servant and do not regret any of it. My husband is one of the DOD employees recalled to work with a lose promise of a paycheck sometime down the road. I am saddened by the blowhards that camp here and hate everything and everybody and have no respect or empathy for others. They need to move to the backwoods of Montana and there they can swill their beer and finger their rifles while they contemplate conspiracy theories.

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel! Both posts - right on the money. Nobody choose to go home except for our elected officials trying to make their point at the expense of the public.
Someone needs to create a list, sorted by state, of all the members of congress. We could carry it to the polling booths and make sure none of them are ever re-elected.
BTW: A lot of government employees didn't live check to check several years ago. With the rising cost of everything except their paychecks, time will slowly regress you to a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle.

It appears there are some who have so much money they can't understand the concept of paycheck to paycheck......including, that necessities aren't something "you don't buy if you can't afford it".
