I read online msn.com 13 worse stores in America and Safeway is 1 of them maybe,,, if more people voice concerns and are heard, maybe things in America might get better i sure hope so.

Low quality meats, boring store...take a look at Wegmans or Harris teeter.....still, Safeway gets busy so most people don't care....their prices are high as well....

They get busy because of the lack of choice within miles of here. I do most of my shopping on my way home from work at the Annapolis commissary.

Sad to say. Here on KI, very substandard food stores. Empty shelves, rotten outdated produce, outdated dairy and bakery items (you must really scan all the dates on all the items!!) High prices and disinterested employees. The last time I walked into the Safeway I was immediately hit with the stench of rotten fruit. (Guess the old Acme smells had to find a new home LOL). I finally gave up on local shopping unless it is something I need right away. Don't want to pay the big toll on the bridge (thanks OweMalley) so I now go into Delaware to shop. Redners outside of Dover on Rt 8 is wonderful. Clean store, friendly employees, good produce, good prices and NO SALES TAX ON ANYTHING. I also get gas rewards just like Safeway. this is an employee owned store so all are motivated to do a good job. I have never had to wait in line to check out (unlike Food Lion with their one checker or Safeway with their long lines). Only 40 min from my home.
SMH, how sad to say I shop at a food store 40 min away,I mean we don't live in Moosebut Wyoming, do we?

So you'll drive an hour each way, burning three or four gallons of gas at $3.50-$4 a gallon to save a $2.50 to cross the bridge with an EZ Pass.

Is it wrong for me to want the island to evolve into something better which might be better stores? Deputy, did you move to KI thinking it would never evolve because if you did....

Deputy...been here over 35 years. When we moved here there was not much here. It truly was rural! It was a big day when the oyster shell road finally got paved! If you went out during the daytime in the middle of the week, there was no traffic. Now route 8 is constant cars 24/7. What stores there were usually closed by 6pm. But then, the bridge traffic was no where near what it is now plus it was much cheaper to pay the toll, so did not mind going on the western side to shop. Working across the bridge, raising a family here, we were glad when some shopping finally came. At first it was great, the stores were nice and had the shelves stocked. Over the years they have sadly deteriorated. Maybe they could not handle the mass influence of newcomers over the last 15 years. For me, I am realistic in accepting the fact that populations increase, people want to raise their families in good areas with good schools. That is just the way it is. Maybe those that are always telling people they should move back need to move further out if they want to live in isolated areas.

Who are the legislators that allow the island to be developed the way it has? Obviously, they don't give a hoot about fast food and gas stations overrunning everything.

OK.. so, some folks don't like Safeway, but, looking at how busy it seems most of the time, it must be a minority. With that said, what will it take to get higher quality shopping here on Kent Island? Also, we shouldn't be forced to go off island, as some would say, if your desire is to keep your shopping and business on the island. Deputy.. please don't repeat and say "this is what you moved to." Let's rationally discuss something called progress, which should not be measured by getting a second McD's or a bigger Dunkin Donuts opening, which seems to be lacking.
We have it right here from a 35+ year resident whose observations is things have gone downhill over the years. We can't blame lack of development or population growth as I am certain the island's population has increased to support those businesses that decide to come here. Gas is not getting cheaper and the tolls go up and up. We've got that spot where the ACME used to be, primed and ready to accept another store to compete with Food Lion and Safeway. When you do not have much competition, where is the incentive to provide better services? Once areas like the Four Seasons, Ellendale, The Cloisters, and potentially what may come from the SKI in-fill growth, it appears the opportunity to get some higher end shopping could be in the future with a larger population on the island. What will it take?

Here's one 35+ resident that will be long gone before all that happens. You are right, bb, that a new macdonalds or dd is not progress. So when you hear the old farts reminiscing about the good old days and lamenting what's been happening to this poor island, it's not that we are necessarily against progress, but against the never-ending onslaught of mindless crap just to fill someone's pocket.

Seems like some selective memories to me. I've been here a few decades also.
Bridge traffic is worse? I says' it's probably relative. Remember traffic lights on route 50, the old kent narrows draw bridge being the only kent narrows crossing, No route 8 overpass, Go back further to just having ONE bay bridge and alternating traffic patterns. Tolls went up, sure did. when I started paying bridge tolls I made $6. an hour, now I make a heck of a lot more.
There's a lot of exaggeration in some of the posts about how bad it is here. It's not. If it were really that horrible here most if us wouldn't be here. Bad stores? Shop elsewhere. Easy Fix. Combine your trips and know when to go where. It's part of the way of life on K.I.
As "bad" as some of you say it is here, it's still AWESOME compared to where I came from and how that place has gone downhill.

Deputy, did you move to KI thinking it would never evolve because if you did.... It doesn't matter, I WAS CURIOUS, and I said that.. I moved here for similar reasons, and to get away from the crap I left behind. Unlike some people I even looked around before coming here. I liked what I saw, did some more homework and picked my location well. And yes, I do think it's wrong for you to move here expecting to to bring your big city "needs" (call it what you want) and change things to suit you. Not everyone needs everything at their fingertips, or at the next corner store. If the stores here really SUCKED, there would be no one in there, and they would close their doors. As unpopular as Kmart is on this site, it seems to do very well. Who remembers the Grand Opening?

Lainey, in my case when I bought here over 10 years ago, there was less costly housing available in both Bay City and Cloverfields than what I bought further south on the island. So, your comment is rather pointless! Just another dig against someone who would like to have what you have, sewer and cleaner yards.

Where'd my "Stop Sewer Inequality" post disappear to? I know it's a catchy-phrase, but I doubt it's trademarked. I know it was here because Jack commented on it, and it wasn't offensive, so are the demonic forces of Sewer Inequality trying to silence the 99%?

Both have been very "vocal" towards those that indicate any support for SKI sewer or make points in support of it.
