I testified at the Queen Anne's County Commissioners Budget/Constant Yield Hearing last night at the Liberty Building in Centreville. I asked the Commissioners to give the taxpayers of Queen Anne's County a $100 raise this next year by reducing the county's (piggy back) income tax rate from the current rate of 3.2%. This would provide the 50,000+ residents of Queen Anne's County about a $100 reduction each in their annual income taxes paid to the county.
The Commissioners increased the income tax rate to the maximum allowed by state law (3.2%) when financial times were tough due to dramatically reduced property values. However, this year it led to a windfall in income tax revenues and the county will close out this fiscal year (ending June 30) with a multi-million dollar surplus.
I believe that when government collects much more than it planned in tax revenues - it should give some back to the citizens who pay the bills. While the Commissioners are facing lots of pent up demands and requests to spend this money on "worthy" causes - I think the most worthy cause is to remember the hard working taxpayers and let them share in the surplus. I asked the Commissioners to give the taxpayers of Queen Anne's County a $100 raise this next year by reducing the county's (piggy back) income tax rate by 1/2 of .1 off the current rate of 3.2%. This would provide the 50,000+ residents of Queen Anne's County about a $100 reduction each in their annual income taxes paid to the county and reduce revenue to the county by about $500,000 next year. The Commissioners increased the income tax rate to the maximum allowed by state law (3.2%) when financial times were tough due to dramatically reduced property values. Then why are they planning to charge us for a beach permit if they have a surplus? Just re=appropriate the money.

Is it time to start policing these types of advertisements a bit more and putting them into the politico section? Lord knows this is going to get out of hand once candidates realize they have a free forum to plaster their platforms on. Maybe replace the soapbox with an "Election Central". Otherwise this place is going to start looking like the Castle Marina traffic circle.

I'm ok with paying the taxpayers back but make sure the rainy day fund has been replenished first, please.

Worried most about Wilson and Anderson but I hope they can come around with a little more education. I know Jim is going to do his best to see it through.

I spoke with John Nickerson a week ago or so. Anderson and Wilson ran on a platform of shutting down the sewer. They did that without ever speaking to John. They are supposed to meet with him in the near future. It will be interesting to see if they do an about face or not after that. Just like Bob Simmons.
In case you don't know, John Nickerson is the head of environmental health for the County.

MDE can force it and it seems like an appropriate time after all that hard work that has been done to get it this far. Can't imagine how it hurts to be on a holding tank with a limited income. I do not want to be next.

Commissioner Simmons is a smart man and he was against resolving this until he became more informed. Hope the others will see the light once educated. Time will tell.

At recent candidate forums, Anderson did not say he would shut down the project. Buckey has been heard to say the same. Only Hogan mentioned any actions on her part to shut it down depending on how far along it is. (She simply did not want ANY new homes in SKI and is in the pockets of QACA and KIDL) As for Anderson, his concerns are for the costs, are the county's estimates correct? Also, for the viability of the STEP system. Lastly, it would be political suicide for this county to go to the state, after all that was done with HB11, applying for the grants and low cost loans, to then say "Never mind." As noted in many areas, this matter will not go away on its own and the WIP Goals can be satisfied a lot with this project at no cost to the taxpayers directly. The county is in position to control this and not have their hand forced by the state for something that may be more expensive to the county and the users.
