Ok - let me try and understand this once and for all.
What the anti-growth folks are saying is that it's better to accept a lack of quality and variety of restaurants, supermarkets, etc. on Kent Island. That it's better to climb into our cars for a 20-30 minute drive either across the bridge to Annapolis or to Easton for breakfast at a diner or a restaurant or modern supermarket. Doing that is better than having a few more additions to the selection in your hometown (or Island). You want to keep Kent Island the quiet place it was, let's say 20 years ago, and driving the extra distance for basic shopping needs like a supermarkets is worth it to accomplish that goal.
If I'm reading you correctly, and I think I am, I just don't see the logic.
I feel the need to remind you that there is a six lane superhighway running through Kent Island. The quiet place you remember may not really exist anymore, and probably hasn't since the bridges and route 50 were built. Slow and steady growth is necessary for all businesses to survive. Also - gas is about three dollars a gallon.
I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I still see lots of irony.

What the anti-growth folks are saying is that it's better to accept a lack of quality and variety of restaurants, supermarkets, etc. on Kent Island. Funny, I thought we had a variety of all those things now, with quality. I don't want the mediocre (sp) chains in hereThat it's better to climb into our cars for a 20-30 minute drive either across the bridge to Annapolis or to Easton for breakfast at a diner or a restaurant or modern supermarket. I don't have a problem finding breakfast here now. WHAT does a "modern " supermarket have that we don't have now? (I still don't get it).Doing that is better than having a few more additions to the selection in your hometown (or Island). Yeah, it really is, if I need to.You want to keep Kent Island the quiet place it was, let's say 20 years ago, and driving the extra distance for basic shopping needs like a supermarkets is worth it to accomplish that goal. Yep, You nailed itIf I'm reading you correctly, and I think I am, I just don't see the logic. My apologies....I feel the need to remind you that there is a six lane superhighway running through Kent Island. The quiet place you remember may not really exist anymore, and probably hasn't since the bridges and route 50 were built. Slow and steady growth is necessary for all businesses to survive. Also - gas is about three dollars a gallon. Yeah, I noticed that the other day! It's amazing how small we are with all those cars that go right on by here everyday. Let's keep them moving!I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I still see lots of irony. No irony here, I hang 'em right out of the dryer!

You've got to be kidding me! Chain places are horrible for you. There was an article a few years back in Consumer Reports on how fattening places like Applebee's and TGI Friday's are compared to regular restaurants. I agree with the point that basically how can you trust a place that has no local interests, kids working and managing, and everything comes pre-packed and frozen. I also agree that they offer a lot of bland food and specialize in nothing. I would welcome a Thai place, Sushi, Indian, Italian, etc., place hands down over some cookie cutter blandateria like Applebee's any day!

Rick--You're a genius! I totally agree with you. I find most chain restaurants dirty, disgusting, fattening..and only a stop of last resort off a lonely highway on a long drive. Let the other cities have 'em. I agree that some quality ethnic restaurants would be a huge boost here--as long as no smoking is allowed. The menu at "Small Plates" looks great, but when I went in the dining room, it had a stale smoky smell, and I lost my appetite!

Here's one to continue an arguement... I noticed the other day while out eating at one of our local restaurants... Why is it all of these people are saying in this forum that they want a place to take their children to for an affordable meal when they DO take them out they cannot seem to control them or their screaming (I am not talking about infants, that really cannot be helped I do get that...) OR their cracker mess. When you learn to have your kids stop pulling my hair from behind me, kicking my seat or spitting crackers at me I will be just fine with dining with them... (wow am I a little crabby today or what??)

ljp, that would require something most parents are entirely unfamiliar with - a little concept known as parenting! If the teachers don't show them, no one does. All that "It takes a village" BS is biting us in the arse. Few things irritate me as much at a restaurant as poorly behaved kids. I know one set of parents that actually have well behaved kids. My brother and his wife are the worst. Not crabby, just honest.

The thing that gets me is when I see little kids in bars. I regularly see people that bring their kids into the bar side of Big Bats when it is filled with smoke and people using "blue" language. That's totally piss-poor parenting to the tenth degree!

THAT is really sad... I know a family that does the same thing, they drink like nobody's business and take their kids wherever they go. Concerns me not only that the kids are in the bar, but that the parents feel the need to bring them to the bars because they know they are going to be there for a while.....and then drive them home...

I agree, I won't have anything alcoholic when I may be driving the kids. Too much risk these days.
BTW: Since reading some of the posts about smokey places to eat, I've noticed Big Bats is relatively smoke free. Even the bar side. It must have a great ventilation system.
