From QACPS: Greetings Queen Anne's County Public Schools Families,
You may be aware that March 14, 2018, is being recognized as a National School Walk-Out day. In many states across the country, students are planning to show support for increased school safety in the wake of the tragedy that occurred in Broward County by walking out of class for 17 minutes at 10:00 am on March 14th.
Queen Anne's County Public Schools supports students’ Constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and free expression. Our goal in responding to walk-out plans and other forms of peaceful assembly is to try and keep focus on teaching and learning while providing guidance and planning to support student and staff safety. In meeting with principals, it was determined that each middle and high school would meet with student leaders to determine how students would be given the opportunity to express their thoughts on the issue of school safety in a peaceful and safe manner in lieu of walking out. Some schools will have students observe 17 seconds of silence, some schools will have students sign a banner demonstrating solidarity with other students across the country, and some schools will hold a short assembly. Elementary schools will not participate in walk-out related activities. The activities are open to any middle and high student who wishes to participate. Alternative activities will be available to any student who wishes to refrain from participation.
Student safety is of critical importance. Your assistance in having conversations with your child about the importance of staying on school property is greatly appreciated. If a student leaves school property at any time without permission, school staff will follow our protocol of contacting parents and notifying local law enforcement. Please also take this opportunity to remind your child, "If you see something, say something." Thank you for your support.
