Today my children and I visited the QA County Dept of Animal Services. We already have animals but are keeping our eye out for a little dog. I just can't physically walk several strong dogs at the same time and that is why we are looking for a small dog.
We played with many dogs and even some kitties. We may end up fostering some kittens (or kitten). I don't think I'll be able to foster any older cats because I have an old cat already who is fine with younger cats, but doesn't care for other big cats.
Anyway, Barb is right. They are very crowded right now. They need both adoptive parents and foster parents. I was told that the kittens and puppies are often taken into rescues if they aren't adopted. If you can't adopt, they really do need Foster Homes for the adult cats and dogs.
I'll tell you about some of the cuties we played with today.
This little cutie is the reason we went in. He is extremely cute and playful. He jumped right into my lap and was licking me all over; however, he was a little snappy with my kids. He was playing very well with my kids but when he hopped in my lap and started licking me, one of my kids reached over to try to pet him again and he gave a little snap. He would be fantastic with either grown kids or an all adult household. Like I said he was fantastic with me and was licking me all over. Here is his photo:

Another dog we played with was just a wonderful dog, his name is Meko. He is absolutely beautiful and has very pretty eyes. He would be a great family dog. My kids and I all loved him, but he is really too big for me to handle, given I would also be walking another big/strong dog. My kids were throwing toys to him and he would get the toy and bring it back to them. He was also full of kisses. He was extremely loving. He would make an awesome family dog. He is young and beautiful and extremely affectionate and happy dog. He was wonderful with all of my kids. He actually looks like he is smiling when he is with you playing. Here are photos of this beautiful boy (the photos really don't show how adorable he is):

There were also several beautiful labs there who are very nice.
One of the labs is Oreo and he is a friendly guy too. Apparently he is one of the staff's favorites (I can see why).

There are also many Pit Bulls there. I know there are quite a few Pit Bull people here
As far as the cats, they have a lot. We pet a lot of cats and didn't get scratched or hissed at by any cats. There were some of the friendliest cats today. We got nose rubs and licks and tons of guys and gals coming up to greet us! Maybe it was just our lucky day, all of the cats were really friendly with us.
If I didn't already have an old cat at home who likes to be the lion of our home, I would be extremely tempted by one of these adult felines. One of the cats was a big beautiful black and white cat and he just kept rubbing against me and rolling around on his back to be petted. I think he thought he was a dog!
There were so many adult cats that we didn't get to pet all of them. Here is a beautiful cat with 6 toes! I felt bad because we didn't get a chance to hold him before we left. He came right up to the edge of the cage and was meowing in a really talking kind of way (not annoying or loud meowing, more like the cat commercial with the cat signing). Have you ever heard a cat talk? I know he was saying that he really wanted to be held. Here is his photo:

Anyway, like Barb said... they are very full. Right now they are offering a 2 for 1 price on all adoptions of cats and dogs until the end of the year!!
If you can't adopt, can you foster??
I couldn't find the photo of the one cat I talked about, but all of the cats were very friendly. The above photos of the dogs were some of the ones we played with.
There was also a small Shepherd Mix there who was friendly. I'm guessing she is a mix with a Collie, but not sure. She was a new arrival and was friendly and quite open to getting some loving from my kids. I guess she doesn't have a photo on Petfinder yet because she is a new arrival.
The shelter is open tomorrow folks!!
