The QAC Shelter has taken in 10 dogs today! 10 dogs in just one day!! Right now they have 29 kennels and 33 dogs. They are in desperate need of foster homes for these dogs! Or adopt a dog -- they have two very nice Chesapeake Bay Retrievers there www.petfinder.com/shelters/MD81.html - There is also an older Rottweiler and a dachshund who has one eye due to a necessary surgery. If anyone can help or has thought about helping - this is the time. They contacted me today to foster the Rott and Dachshund but I have no room at the inn -- and I'm about to have to have surgery on my arm. Please - we all know what will happen if they can't find foster homes!

Unfortunately, most of the kennels are filled up with pit bulls, some of which are the nicest dogs you could want. One in particular, Opal, is the sweetest dog I have ever encountered, regardless of breed. But many of them are unadoptable because of various reasons. So they are being housed there, since very seldom are animals euthanized at QAC shelter. There are some residents of QAC who feel that all dogs deserve to be adopted; even the ones that cannot be taken out of their kennels by shelter workers because they are so unpredictable, vicious, etc. The shelter workers are angels, but if you can find it in your heart to be a foster home for an animal, it is a wonderful service. Also, if you are thinking of getting a pet, please consider the animal shelter in QAC. Believe me, even if the dog is a pit bull, there are some really nice ones there at the present time. Please think about it.

It is a shame all the dogs and cats that get abused and abandoned.. but before you let emotion overcome reason.. and yes, I have seen so-called pit bulls that were very laid back and sweet dogs.. but that doesn't change the fact the bull terriers have tremendous biting power and a tendency to hold on after biting..
Many dogs that bite people have no history of aggression or ever biting someone before.
check with your homeowners insurance.. some comapnies have exclusions for pit bulls.. might even get a cancelation notice if the insurance company finds out you have one..
I know it doesn't seem fair, but that's the way it is.
My Erie insurance man is the one who gave me the warning about the pitbulls.
Best regards, BC PS, why do I know about this stuff? I owned and operated a pet fence company for several years. I have worked with just about every breed of dog there is. Generally speaking, German Shepherds and Chows bite way more people than pit bulls. A Veterinarian friend of mine owns a pet hospital in PA. His standard policy requires only two breeds to be muzzled before being brought into the hospital.. Chows and Shepherds..

I have one and have worked with Many different kind of animals over the years..and this statement you have made is not true. If your friend who is a vet requires all german shepherds to be muzzled...he shouldn't be a vet. I would like to see the statistics you found that GSD's bite more then other dogs...PURE BREED GSD's...not a mix. Alot of times...just because a dogs ears stand up they call it a GSD when they can't figure out what it is.... Barb

I fostered for them a couple of years ago before the kids came along. I took a momma cat and 5 kittens. It was the best experience, a little hard to let go of the kittens (I did actually keep one) ;D If you have the room it is a great thing to do. I would love to do it again but we already have 3 dogs. It's sad the number of animals they have there.

Well, BC, as much as I THOROUGHLY enjoy your posts, sadly, I find myself having to disagree with the German Shepherd statement and cannot understand that vet friend of yours. Maybe he/she had a bad experience with a pit or shepherd, but I would think he's cutting his nose off to spite his face to single out breeds like that. I've had three shepherds. First a white, then a black, and now a white again and they've all been very, very good in a vet's office. While I realize there are agressive ones, as there are in any and many breeds, my Shepherds have been wonderful, sweet, and lots of fun -- and they've all loved kids. They are extremely protective and I like that very, very much. Only once or twice did my black not stop with the honches up when someone came to the door and I allowed entrance to the person(s) -- which was odd -- but I strongly believe you should take heed from a dog's instinct. They always communicate with you in "dog-ease". Now, don't get me wrong, I never did and don't today totally trust them, as I wouldn't with any animal. I do agree it mostly has to do with their "rearing" -- and, of course, I'll be more than happy when my 9 month old white is 24 months and settles down. Right now she's very vocal, sassy, and clumsy as an ox.......and my boxer is a riot! Never a dull moment.
P.S. -- If I had the room and the yard space I would adopt and foster them all. Unfortunately, I'm moving and there won't be any room to do so.... I especially keep envisioning Jacskon, the St. Bernard.... but I don't dare go visit him....
And on a sad note, a little over a week ago, my daughter was travelling down 480 and little teeny tiny munchkin of a kitten was just sitting on the white line on the shoulder of the road in front of a house that had burned to the ground. She turned around to go back and the kitten was gone. Turned around again to continue to the skate park to p/u my one of my grandsons and the kitten was still gone. Went to the skate park and as they were passing that same burned house -- there was the kitten again sitting on the white line on the side of the road. Sooo they turned around and picked him up. The little fella fit right in the palm of her hand and still had blue eyes. So so tiny. She took him immediately to a vet friend's home, bathed him in kitten flea shampoo, and did a physical. He was so tiny and needed to be with his mother -- but she wasn't to be found and my daughter couldn't leave him sitting on the side or the road to get run over. The kids named him Harley, their dog protected him, and after a week or so....well, this morning he passed on. Broke my heart. Maybe she should have left him, but then maybe not.....I guess you never know but I would have erred on the same side she did, too. So sad....

Barb Ask for Maria Samaras -- I don't actually work there - but I try to help Maria when I can. In regards to the pit bulls -- make sure you know the breed and are prepared to handle that type of breed. Majority of pits that are in the shelter are there because the people get them for the wrong reasons and can't handle them. (along with other high energy dogs) I had Rottweilers for years - but their personalities were like night and day - one could have lived with anyone - the other could not. They aren't for everyone - just like pit bulls aren't for everyone. But there are some nice pits, shepards, chows, and Rottweilers out there. I have a scar on one arm from a bad dog bite brought on by a cocker spaniel! Again -any help is appreciated!

i also disagree about german shepherds. i've had a couple, and they were sweet and gentle. it may be in part how they are raised, etc. they are, after all, shepherds. one of mine--a male (not neutered) had a baby duck as a pet--the duck thought he was his mother, followed him everywhere, when he was not being herded. we had a field mouse in a box until we could take it far away from the house. we also had a cat. when the mouse went missing, we found that the dog was carrying it around the house IN his mouth (he put it down, gently, when we realized what was going on), apparently to protect it.
i believe any dog, or animal, can be trained or raised to be vicious, or the reverse. i don't doubt that there are some that are just genetically bad, but these are individuals, not entire breeds.

Agreed - - - I used to do quite a bit of Rottweiler Rescue work in the South and I remember a female we rescued once who had burn marks on her face and lips-- apparently the "owner" was trying to make her into a guard dog for his "possessions" and was trying to make her bite by sticking electrical wires in her mouth. She was still the sweetest dog ever --very shy - but did not take long to balance. Those people should be whipped. Many - if not the majority of the time - it's the owner - not the dog. -- ADOPT - SPAY/NEUTER and enroll in OBEDIENCE!

I have a 10 year old shepherd/husky. We have never had any problems with him. Now I have noticed that he is not as good with the little ones as he used to be. He has not tried to bite but he just is not as calm as he used to be with the little kids. And he does not like anyone to rough house if he does not know you very well. He is just a loveable old thing. We had a collie/lab for 14 years and she would bite any one she did not know. But she love kids. You could put any child in my yard with her and they were safe. But fair warning if you tried to get your child back without one of my family members she would bite. We always had signs posted for warnings. She was just very protective. If she knew you you were fine.

I am afraid to ask, but what is a bait dog?
|
|
|
Post by kim on Oct 17, 2008 18:11:11 GMT -4
A bait dog is a dog who is tormented by having it chained or confined and setting other usually larger and agressive dogs upon it for sport. Sometimes the dogs bite, and tear to subdue the opposing animal by incapacitating or killing it. Other times it's used to test the level of aggressiveness in a dog they want to fight.
Whoever the people are that do that need to be secretly dealt with.

In fact just the thought of knowing there is a dog up there that was a bait dog is stressing me out -- good thing for the Yoga classes I have recorded! Of course a martini sounds good too!
