Introduced by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, H.R. 3501—known as the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act—is a federal bill that would reward responsible pet parents by allowing them to keep more money in their pockets come tax time. thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.3501: (Copy and paste the link) We all want to give our animal companions the best care we possibly can, but it seems that pet care costs are always on the rise—and these days, it’s harder than ever to stretch the family budget. That’s why the ASPCA supports H.R. 3501, which would amend U.S. tax code to allow qualifying pet care expenses, including veterinary care, to be tax-deductible. This means that when you prepare your income taxes, money you spent on pet care that year would count as non-taxable income—and you can deduct up to $3,500 per year! Please help us support the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501. What You Can Do: Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center online to send an email to your U.S. representative and urge him or her to support and cosponsor the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501. secure2.convio.net/aspca/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=2605&JServSessionIdr002=0hz670mgi2.app23b (Copy and paste the link)

How can you support this? Don't you know that pets inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide? Lets not talk about the waste produced by these so called pets! This bill will only increase Global Warming! Stop Global Warming! Ban Pets Now!

Our tax laws aren't large enough, complicated enough, or filled with enough special-interest deductions already?

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, encouraging people to take good care of their pets is important. On the other hand, I know that the benefits I want from the government (like Obama's health care plan) are going to require funding. And while I often joke that my cats should count as dependents on tax forms (they do depend on me! ;D), the truth is that adopting an animal is a choice and that the owner should be willing to accept the consequences--financial and otherwise.
So... I didn't click on the link to send a message to my Congresspeople when I got this email.

$3500 is not that much money, many people spend much more than that on their pets at the vets. When it comes to Global Warming and pet waste, my only issue is with pet waste is why is it okay for people to walk their dogs and leave their waste on other people's property. Even if you take a bag to do cleanup, you don't get it all, the scent is still there to attract other dogs. The urine just soaks into the ground, there is no cleaning that up. I have never understood the "it's okay to walk your dog and let him deficate and urinate on other people's property" thing.

be sure you know it is your property. there is an easement in front of people's property by the roads that belongs to the county. it is not the homeowner's, and people can park there or walk their dogs or whatever the county allows. one would hope they would clean up. what i love is the people who walk their dogs loose, or live nearby and let their dogs run loose, and turn their backs when their dog goes ON your property and does his business. charming.

Sounds to me like Rep. Thaddeus McCotter needs more to do. If he were my rep. I'd be campaigning for his next oppenent.
Just what we need, federally subsidized pet ownership.
What a joke.
LET ME DEDUCT MY KIDS COLLEGE TUITION, 100% SINCE I'M PAYING FOR IT IN FULL OUT OF MY POCKET FROM MY SAVINGS THAT I PLANNED FOR.

If it is not my property, I wish the county would come cut the grass. If there was trash or something unsightly or illegal there, you can bet the county would complain to me about it and not take responsibility for it themselves.
