"It is automatic but once the charge clears it comes off. " ?? So if the charge doesn't clear it stays on?? And since when does a restaurant get to automatically add a tip to your bill?? I can understand when its a large party and they take up a lot of the waitress's time to then require a 'service charge', but a table of 2 - 4 they have no right to add an automatic tip. It then becomes a service fee and they should disclose that upfront so one can choose not to do business with them.

my guess its more of a hold. I just know when I use my card it comes off and only the amount of the check is whats charged. I never tip on my car. I always leave a cash tip. my guess is maybe a hold?

When the card is swiped at the restaurant, no money actually changes hands. The account, whether it is your account with the credit card company or your account at the bank, is attached for some amount of money. In some cases, like gas stations, it might be as little as $1 while in others, like bars, it might be as much as $100 before you take the first sip of your drink. A few days later, after the receipts are entered into the system and the system downloads to the banking network, the charge "clears" in that the actual amount of the charge is applied against your account and the initial hold is removed. (I've seen the two overlap in my account so it actually looked like I was charged twice) I'm not at all surprised that Luke's, being both a restaurant and a bar, automatically adds 20% for the initial hold. It affects most people very little since in a few days the receipt gets to the bank and the deduction is adjusted to be the actual amount signed for. They do not automatically charge a tip since the 20% amount gets erased as soon as the receipt is received. The only people who actually pay the 20% are the ones who do not sign the receipt. The only people who don't sign the receipt are the ones who walk out on their bill. Call it a customary tip that the person just forgot when they left without paying or call it a penalty for walking out on your bill; in either case, it isn't excessive.

It's just to make sure you aren't overdrafting...in most cases, if you do not have 20% more than the amount you are debiting/charging, your card will be declined. Kinda protects you and the establishment, and as everyone has already said, the bank will usually fix this within 2-3 days of the batching automatically.

I wanted to give a quick "shout out" to Sue. I believe she is the manager. She responded to a minor problem that I ran into at Luke's a bit back.
I didn't want to post my problem for all of KIO. I didn't think it was an outrageous problem and it simply didn't warrant that kind of attention. Having said that, I did feel that I should say something to Luke's.
Class act response from them. Food is delicious and management is on top of their game. This is a community restaurant that will always get my business.
Thanks Sue!

We got take out from Luke's for the first time not too long ago and was surprised at how good it was and reasonably priced. We liked it so much that we took my parents to it the next time they were in town and had a great experience. The waitress was the only one working and things got busy, so we got a little less attention than you might expect. But she explained her situation to us and I thought she did a great job considering how many tables she had to deal with while also trying to seat people.

Me and my mom went to Lukes last night, after walking in Harris' and seeing the oyster bar was 35.00 and walking back out, driving by Rustico and saying, wow what a snobby joint. We decided to hit up Luke's.. glad I did. I got the Black and Blue burger, boy was it good and two frosty Coors Lights.. tasty. Was reasonable and the waitress was good too.

The honey moon is over.....
We have been visiting Luke's pretty much every week since after labor day. I have been impressed with the service, the young servers hustle (Stephanie, Renee). Rich or Rick? bartender great. The food is a generous portion, hot and at a good price. The atmosphere is very pub like. Joined the football club and do happy hour on a regular basis.
Annie's had been our Sunday football spot for the past 5 years. Usually always good, can be very crowded at times (OC crowd going home) and is a bit pricey.
The wife and I went to Luke's last night to catch the late afternoon games. Had some domestic chores that needed to be done so we couldn't catch the early games. Was looking forward to relaxing from being cooped up in the house from this past family bonding weekend. Thought the patriots and steelers game would be a good watch.
Got there right after the game started, not real busy which was surprising. Sat at the bar watching the game. It took a few minutes to get the first beverage which was OK. That first one goes down fast you know and I was in need for my next one. Started to look around for the bartender and I noticed he was waiting tables. Saw only one other server that was tending to the restaurant side.
I won't boor you with all the details. Was there for 36 minutes (according to my check) and was able to get only one drink. Heard a few grumblings from some other patrons. Had planned on doing the normal appetizer thing and then a meal with a few more beverages for the game. It didn't happen, I was was sorely disappointed.
Went to Annie's. Had a good time, Thanks Pam and Leslie!
By the way, any Luke's personnel that reads this. Could you look at keeping the music (performers) level down a bit more during the Friday evening dinner time frame. Turn it up say at 9:30-10:00pm. Met some clients there one Friday evening for a little schmoozing. We had some difficulty having a conversation. Asked the server if it could be turned down a bit, she said "it's always this loud on Friday nights".
Will be back...still a football club member. Hope this is not a trend.
We still have a positive streak happening going to R's. Keep it up!

OK, we kissed and made up.....
I said we would keep going to Luke's. Went last night with the wife and met up with some friends for drinks and dinner. New bartender Zeek did a fine job, very personable. Loved it all.
Personally, I think Luke's is the best place in the KI/Narrows area. By far the most consistent operation day in and day out. This past Sunday may have been just a little blip due to the Thanksgiving weekend.
I was remiss to mention before one of the other good servers which is James. Sue, keep up the nice job. It's great to see a manager that cares about the operation and works hard to ensure a positive experience for the patrons.

The burgers are still the best in town, almost too big to finish. Great local restaraunt, which I hope you'll all still support since Cracker Barrel is in town. Support your local businesses, atleast someone ought to.

Well, finally made the trip to the big city last night and tried Luke's for the first time..
Not bad.. service was good.. I think it was Rick at the bar, and then another fella joined him later..
Reduced price appetizers... I got the tuna and my friend got 1/2 pound steamed shrimp.. a shared french dip and a couple cocktails each.. less than $50 with a 20% tip..
I will be back..
Best regards, BC
