Which one? The Gunpowder Bison guy or the organic beef and eggs guy? Two weeks ago the beef & eggs guy was there...but no bison. That was disappointing. I would like to know if the bison guy was going to be back tonight. I would make a special trip out there if he was.

I asked Kristin what the story was, she sent me this:
The market has fluctuated over the last couple weeks because some of the vendors have been away on vacation. Chapels Country Creamery (cheeses and yogurt) are cutting back to just the first Tuesday of every month. The last market will be November 2nd. It will restart again at the end of April 2011. Next years market will be bigger and better, if the community continues to support the market. I am looking to bring in artisan breads and take-home, organic, healthy meals. Please continue to spread the word and come every week. If you love a vendor, tell them that!! They need your feedback, it's the only way this market will survive! Thank you so much for your support in my first season getting this market up and running.
Warmest Regards, Dr. M

From Dr. Mowry: I am proud to offer the opportunity for you to reserve a Heritage Turkey. Don't know what a Heritage Turkey is? Heritage Turkeys Prized for their rich flavor and beautiful plumage, Heritage Turkeys are the ancestors of the common Broad-breasted White industrial breed of turkey that comprises 99.99% of the supermarket turkeys sold today. But the Heritage Breeds still exist and are making a comeback. Most breeds of heritage turkey were developed in the United States and Europe over hundreds of years, and were identified in the American Poultry Association's turkey Standard of Perfection of 1874. These breeds include the Standard Bronze, Bourbon Red, Jersey Buff, Slate, Black Spanish, Narragansett and White Holland. With rich tasting meats more moist and flavorful than the mass produced large-breasted turkeys of today, Heritage Breeds owe their taste to diverse diets and extended life-spans. Dining on fresh grass and insects, these birds exercise and even help control farmer's pest problems. And while large corporations have dominated turkey production and breeding since the 1960's, choosing the Broad Breasted Whites because of high breast meat production in a short period, Heritage Breeds have been quietly gaining a renewed market and respect due to their flavor and superior biological diversity. Raising Heritage Breeds is more costly and time consuming than raising White Breasted Toms. While supermarket turkeys grow to an average of 32 pounds over 18 weeks, Heritage birds take anywhere from 24-30 to reach their market weight. But those who have tasted Heritage Breeds say the cost-and the wait-are well worth it. We will be proudly offering Heritage Turkeys from our farm this year. We raise three heritage breeds: Naragansetts, Bourbon Reds, and Standard Bronze. The variety fits the weight ranges our customers are looking for. They run 6-12 lbs; 10-15 lbs., and 14-18 lbs respectively on average. They may be slightly more or less depending on the season and the bird. We have tried them all, and though we have not had occasion to do so side by side, as it were, we have found them all to be really nice in terms of flavor (which I feel is pasture derived). I have found little difference in flavor between breeds; they have all been uniformly delightful, a fact we are quite pleased with. Structurally they are different from a broad-breasted turkey, having longer legs and a flatter chest with a more prominent breast bone; however, we have not lacked for meat on any of them. As far as that goes, we suggest a pound per person. We have noticed that the birds consistently cook faster than a commercial broad-breasted; we do 12-15 min./lb. but check the bird at 12 min./lb. adding time if necessary. In terms of cost, they are $5.95/lb.. We ask for a $20 deposit to hold a reservation. Size availability is based upon a first come/first served basis since heavier weights are often requested and the number of toms we have is limited. We can provide two smaller birds, if necessary, to cover most weight requirements and sometimes have to do that. Having doubled up more than once ourselves, we have found this to be as convenient as one large bird since we are able to roast the birds side by side at the same time. The added benefit is having four legs to work with instead of only two for those who, like myself, prefer dark meat. The long and the short is that while we absolutely stand behind the quality of the birds, we cannot make an unconditional guarantee of only one bird per order. Unlike the broad breasted which tend to be conveniently uniform in size, there is often substantial individuality, as with people, amongst birds of the same age and flock. Gaylord Clark of Two Oceans Seafood will be at the market this Tuesday, November 2nd. He will be taking orders for heritage birds starting at 4pm and lasting till 6pm. Yes, this is outside of the market hours, so feel free to come early! To access more information and direct contact to Gaylord, please go to www.Facebook.com/twooceanstruefoods -- You do not need to be subscribers to Facebook to access the site. A deposit needs to be made on a heritage turkey to ensure that you are able to have one on Thanksgiving week. In terms of the deposit, they take cash, most major credit cards, and checks made out to either Two Oceans or Carriage House Farms. Please send the deposit directly to them if you are unable to reserve yours at our Tuesday 11/2 market. For folks who would like to come to the farm, pick-up will be the 22nd - 24th 10:00 - 5:00. However, if there are enough orders from the area, it is likely we can arrange a delivery time and place to Dr. Mowry's Tuesday Market. Hope to see you at the Market on Tuesday!
