I apologize for calling Beachgal an idiot. Frustration is running high. No one ever says anything insulting to me here (read: sarcasm). But name calling is not nice and I sincerely apologize for that.

This debate is raising major concerns with me. I can't hear either of the sirens where I live. How will I know if there is a tornado approaching or an imminent threat of a nuclear attack?

One time I saw lettering on one of those mufferless pickup trucks so ubiquitous to Kent Island. It stated "Loud and Proud". Speaks volumes doesn't it.

Thank you. I was not bothered, I have been called worse, but you are right- name calling is never nice.
I would just like to reiterate what this whole thread was about to begin with- the volunteers who put their lives on the line for us. Thank you for getting up at 4 am to save a life, thank you for standing in the middle of an accident scene on Rt. 50 as traffic flies by, thank you for being so quick to respond when the call comes in. However we feel about the siren, those who respond to it are heroes.

Agreed, Beachgal. The awesomeness of the volunteers was never in question. They are the true heroes in this world.

I think they should reprogram it to play the theme from "Smokey and the Bandit" or David Allan Coe "You dont have to call me Darlin" ...You know...somethin classy like that.

I agree with Rudy. The new firehouse is my backyard and it blows really loud over here. Does not bother me a bit. Just like bay bridge traffic. You eventually get used to it.

I am proud to be a member of KIVFD. I cannot speak on behalf of the department but can tell you this is not an easy issue for the department either. Many of the members and their families are also affected by the siren. The impact to the community is always a concern, after all, we exist for one purpose and that is to serve and protect our friends, neighbors and relatives. There is no intent by the department to cause anyone ill will. It is simply a matter of necessity in order to provide the service. I personally do not live close enough for the siren to get into my head and wake me. When I joined, I had to purchase my own pager (used) for about $250.00. And trust me my wife hates that pager as much as many of you do the siren, lol. Bottom line is the members and officers of the department are not unreasonable and I'm certain will be willing to work toward a mutually acceptable solution.
As has been pointed out, issuing pagers to members would help to get the word of an emergency out to the responders. However, pagers are expensive. A pager like the one I carry is approx, $420.00 new. So assuming the department needed 100 units, that is obviously $42,000.00. This doesn't factor in repair and maintenance costs, etc.
I hope I have been able to provide some information that will be helpful.
My disclaimer: Be aware, my comments are just that, my comments exercised under my right to free speech, and do not in any way represent the views of the fire department.
