Looks like I'm going to be needing my hips replaced sometime within the next year or so (I'm hoping to be able to hold off until June 2012). I know there are quite a few hip surgeons around, but I'm hoping to get some specific recommendations...
1. I have hip dysplasia. (If you've only heard about this condition for older dogs, you're not alone: a Google search makes me feel like I'm the only human adult with this.)
2. I belly dance and this is important to me.
So... ideally, I find a surgeon who has done a hip replacement on someone with hip dysplasia before and who knows enough about belly dancing that they can honestly tell me what effect the surgery will have on my ability to do so. Realistically, though, I'd just like to find a surgeon who's very capable, able to answer questions honestly and thoroughly, and has experience doing hip replacements on younger people (I'm 29).
Any recommendations?

my good friend had her hip replaced a couple of years ago. he used a new technology replacement, with a small incision, etc., and told her she would be able to ski again--and she has. i'll find out for you. i won't be here for a few days, though, so most likely after that. it was up near baltimore, so not so convenient, but i visited her there and it wasn't too bad. she was thrilled with the entire process. she needed help, of course, during recovery, but it is not as long as knee surgery.

Funnel, I had my hip replaced back in 2006. Wasn't hip dysplasia (and you're right, never heard a human having this), just osteroarthritis. Anyway, my surgeon was Dr. Marc Brassard from the Orthopedic and Sports Center. He is sooo nice (not to mention nice looking) and I am able to be "normal." Never belly danced, but stay pretty active. Are you getting both of them done at once? Anyway, the Orthopedic Center is really good and they specialize in joint replacements. They gave me a big notebook full of everything I needed to know and do before the surgury, and what to do afterwards. A couple of months after the surgury, they had a luncheon for the joint replacement people to ask any questions and share their experiences. If I ever have to go thro' that again, it will be there. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I think I'd like to get both done at the same time, just because it'll be so hard on me to stay off my feet (I can't use crutches or a manual wheelchair because of my arms). I just have so many questions... I'll start making some phone calls after Memorial Day weekend...

Well, I could only get one hip done on the 8th (my right one), due to a bone deformity in my left femur (it's too thin for the hardware used in the anterior approach). This ended up being a good thing, because the hip that wasn't replaced is doing better now than before... because my new hip is AWESOME.
