Hello From V & C Lawn Mower and Small Engine Repair,
Here is a suggestion about caring for your small engine equipment: About 95 percent of the problems which I encounter with lawn and garden equipment that will not start up or run properly is directly related to old gas that was left in the fuel system over the winter which was not treated with a fuel stabilizer. The easiest remedy for this is to use a fuel stabilizer treatment such as Sta-Bil, which can be purchased at any auto parts store such as Auto Zone, Advanced Auto parts, Pep Boys, or somewhere such as Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot or any other place that sells small engine equipment and orsupplies. I highly recommend using a fuel stabilizer ALL the time not just for winter storage! This is primarily because today's gasoline has a very short life span of only about a month due to the ethanol that is mixed in with it. The ethanol has a very short life span and in a period of about two weeks begins to break down. In short, it attracts moister, turns into water and then corrodes and deteriorates the internal parts of the carburetor. I have read in some literature where it states that gasoline is only good for approximately two weeks before it starts going bad. Right now the amount of ethanol in our gas is 10 percent. However, the rumor is that they are going to increase it to 15 percent. This will cause even more problems. So, if you ALWAYS use a fuel stabilizer you should never have any problems with your carburetor(s) becoming "Gummed up." Read the directions on the bottle. They usually recommend that you double the amount for winter storage.
*You do not need to worry about going out of your way to purchase ethanol free gasoline! Just use a quality fuel stabilizer ALL THE TIME and you should never have anymore more ethanol related problems with your carburetors. A large bottle of Sta-Bil Marine Formula costs around $20.00 and treats about 360 gallons of gas. It is for less expensive and a lot easier to simply use a fuel stabilizer.
If you have any questions at all or need further assistance regarding your lawn and garden or other small engine equipment please don't hesitate to call me personally at: 410-443-2779 (Cell) or 479-MY-MOWER (Office) and I will be glad to help you over the phone free of charge or you can post your question here and I will post a reply.
Thank you!
