There is a shop going in at the old outlets, her expected open date was Sept 1, they are no where near opening right now but coming soon. The 3 year lease prevents them from raising your rent substantially after your first year of business. Your landlord will want income statements from you and if you are profitable can raise your rent and you then are at their mercy...
I spoke with the owner of Waterman Joes and they have an actual building at a location on the west shore and have been considering building something here where they currently sit, the owner owns that land, but that will be a long way off, if for nothing more than not being able to gain a building permit!
I know that the other shop opening has a broker dealing with local spots for a space and is close to signing with a great spot. I know that they are currently looking for a partner or for an investor if you are interested Alex!!
Where is Jakes Beef? is that the place in front of the ebb tide place?

Hi Beanos... I like your shop - but I must say that the kids that work there are not very sanitary. I have watched each time as they grab bagels with their bare hands, after using the register and handling money! It has become somewhat of an aversion for me. I know that not too many think about things like that ... but please remind your employees to practice safe food handling procedures.

Not to give away any of my grand plans or anything... but I would love to open a cafe on KI. If you are looking to open a food place... offer foods such as those at Panera & Atlanta Bread Company. Each time I go there I know that the food is FRESH... I would love a place that serves warm soups (many different options), fresh baked breads, coffees, desserts, etc. Panera & ABC are also very versatile - people go there for bfast, lunch & dinner. Plus they can take home fresh breads for the rest of the week! I feel like every place on the island has sub par food offerings. If you do open some type of food place - please use high quality ingredients & have flexible hours! Just my two cents ;D

Laurie, you hit it right on the head. Everything you said is exactly what I have heard also. I would love to partner in a coffee on the island as well as a bagel shop. If you here of anybody let me know. I did some consulting for Coca Moka Cafes. They have about 20 locations though out the US. The coffee they use is Seattle's Best. I very good blend.

I like Benoes. I think that the people that work there are very friendly and the food is good. It's an enjoyable place to sit down and read the paper while having breakfast.

If you want economic growth and more affordable housing tell your commissioners you are for moderate and responsible growth.
We have about a dozen of very wealthy people who are in the backpockets of a couple of our commissioners. They are voting everything down from businesses, to homes to downzoning the farmland. Watch out for the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy and the QAC Conservation group- they are ecentrics who are part of the NOT IN MY BACK YARD (NIMBY) group and they have time on their hand and would rather save all the land in QAC to watch the birds. Growth is coming but we have to be careful and so far if they would allow the building to be in the growth area and update the infrastructure- we can assure that. Typicall the home permits levels have always been between 350-400 new homes per year, this year we are only at 132 new homes. OUch! We are all going to have to pay with our pocketbooks if we don't allow people tomove here and contribute to our economy. Nobody wants bad growth but it is comming. According to the state we will need 9050 more home by 2025. We are way behind. Be wary about those sleek brochures you are getting in the mail they are full of gross exagerations. QAC is a leader in the state in preserving agriculture, forest and wetlands. Sorry to be so winded.

As a local businss owner and resident, I agree that we needmoreplacesand things to do with our children of all ages. You must be aware when you are planning though. Times have changed and children are not watched or guided (disciplined) as they need so it is huge liability. The teenagers at the old arcade were dropped off, cigs, alc and even drugs were taking over. It is hard for an owner to watch over 50 plus kids while parents are at home, work or out themselves. Good Luck to everyone! I would love to see a theater, good book store, and have toyed with the idea of a "Trader Joe" type retail store!

Bernadett, I disagree. Is your quote about the "very wealthy people who are in the backpockets of a couple of our commissioners" a fact or your opinion?. Big difference between the two.
Were you living here on the Island during the last election? The three pro growth commissioners were soundly trounced and voted out! The current set of commissioners (with the exception of Smith, who replaced Nemo) and the majority of the Island voters voted for responsible growth, the platform on which all five campaigned.
While I agree with you that the County does need to grow, business wise, I don't believe that we need 9050 homes by 2025. The current infrastructure just won't handle it.
I agree with Native about the county trying to infill all the vacant storefronts on the Island BEFORE they let businesses build new ones.
Finally, I heard that Sunday March 5th was the last day for Beanos. The scuttlebutt was they just didn't have the business.

Three businesses that I would like to see on Kent Island:
1. Movie theater
2. Movie theater
3. Anything at the corner of Rt. 18 and Old Dominion RD, across from the Rite Aid.

What about a bookstore? Not a chain, for preference but an independent place that would books new anWhat else would people like to see such a place have? And what would be the best location?

Although I don't think there is a good place for it, I would like to see a "chain" bookstore myself, something like a Borders, where there is a lot of selection, as opposed to the little place at the outlets (nice for what it is).
I'm from Glen Burnie, and though I do not want this area to turn into one long shopping center, like it is over there on Ritchie Highway, I sure do miss the convience of having choices and places to go that don't take 35 mins to get to.
I'd also love to see something for kids around here. When I grew up we had nothing, but the Citgo by the middle school where we'd flock, and Love Point Park, where we'd wind up getting in trouble.
Now I have a 3 year old, and luckily I teach some Parks and Recs classes (the baby/preschool age) at the old outlets, or there would be nothing for him to really do.

Michael & Jessica, we have a great place for books on the Island. It's the library!

If ya don't want to drive 20/30 minutes to get somewhere, why did ya move here?
Annapolis, Glen Burnie, and that area has plenty of book stores, chain 7 otherwise.......

bchevy you're funny! i was thinking the exact same thing though... Been awhile since I have posted and see that Beanos has come and gone...
I too would love to see some vacant areas filled before new places built. Have you guys noticed the signs on the island heading east for pad sites available?? I think that Route 2 Severna Park will be here before we know it.... it saddens me a little. We actually moved here BECAUSE there was nothing here and to get away with the congestion of Annapolis. I guess I hadn't considered all day Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the summer though. And God forbid Lacrosse tournaments, don't get me started on THAT one!!

Miss the convenience of Glen Burn[ie], eh? Yep, glad you came over to "God's country" to suggest we turn it into another Glen Bernie...
Why is it allthe western shore transplants come over to "God's country" only to buy dirtbikes and tear up and down the streets/fields, and then demand more stores and conveniences, which are built on once vacant land? Why not just stay in GB and come visit once in a while?

There are always exceptions - indeed, they/we prove the rule. My parents transplanted me 20 some years ago... moved from the busy side to the quiet side. No friends within 5 miles, and little to do but appreciate the quiet side of the island.
Now you couldn't drag me back - AND I DON'T WANT IT DRAGGED TO ME. Perhaps that's why it bothers me so much to hear all these planned "improvements"; I saw and lived the Annapolis area way, and now I've seen and lived the shore way... I have no doubts about which I prefer, and no qualms about arguing about it.

would love to see a place with a nice take out salad & soup bar! None of the stores around here have one, and the bag salads are crap.

How about a female strip club. That would be the best money maker around here. It could be BYOB.

A strip club would be great! I'm tired of driving all the way to Baltimore and I'd rather support local single mothers in QAC rather than those on the western shore. Not only would we keep all that money in the county but a local club would keep the men closer to home with less distance to drive home drunk and broke.
