I have lived in all corners of this country & I have seen 2 things happening in every one of them. Either an area continues to grow, which meant as population increased more businesses were brought into the general & surrounding area which brought more people which brought more businesses..........or more people came but businesses didn't come so eventually the area imploded. That is just the way it is. That's how it is here. There is such great potential for growth here of both residence & commerce & to still maintain the integrity of outside the city living but not having to do without a total variety of choices. No disrespect intended here but if you want to see how the area could be developed to benefit locals as well as profit from travelers take a ride out to Columbia, Md. They have combined multi type housing, mass commerce with a hub of a multitude of stores plus numerous businesses peppered through out some of the residential areas. The parking lots have many places that are left as rain gardens ( to break up the continuous pavement & allow for rain run off). There are trails of all kinds EVERYWHERE that interlink with parks. There are small ponds through out the area. It is like a self contained mini world. You don't see buildings sitting there for yrs empty. There isn't anything you cant find within a 20 min drive & traffic isn't bad at all. So it can be done if people open their eyes & minds to the potential. It CAN be a win/win. Sad that more folks here don't get that.... I love living on the island but my husband & I have seriously discussed moving to the Columbia area. Taxes are a bit higher but would be worth what is available..... Sharon, exactly what I have been saying. The time for smart growth is now. If you pretend it wont come or you fool yourself into thinking you can stop the population movement, then one day it will all blow up and really get ugly. So...do you want Columbia or do you want Kent Burnie? Now is the time to plan and make sure the growth that will come is done the best way possible.

Sharon and mdbaygal.... when will we see movement to "middle ground"? Around here things are so polarized. I have seen any call for some level of growth, large or small, or even business growth, IE - WalMart, being met by the opposition calling for absolutely NONE of the growth or business expansion. My opinion and impression of what I have seen. Like the opposition to the SKI sewer project. It has nothing to do about the health and environmental aspects it will solve, but, has all to do with growth and the opponents want none of it. More concerned about traffic, some new homes and seeing an empty lot across the street have a home on it. Plus, when one does call for some "middle ground" they are blasted by some here as being uninformed or outright wrong.

The difference is, Columbia was planned from the beginning, from scratch. KI has gradually built up with the good ol' boy network at the wheel. What would you do here? wipe out the island and start over? Whoever has the money gets to make the plan.

deputy... let me ask you: Are the folks who support KIDL, NO Sewer and other groups who appear, note I said "appear", to denounce just about every growth plan are the folks with money who want to control the plans? Just asking.

Columbia? Kent Island is the place people from Columbia go for vacation.. Columbia has 100K people, all the retail anyone could want but still has higher taxes than Kent Island so why would growth be good for KI?

Columbia has 100K people, all the retail anyone could want but still has higher taxes than Kent Island so why would growth be good for KI? for a $500,000 house the difference in property taxes is 750 a year. Income tax is the same. If you work on that side of the bridge you'll save that in tolls for the BB. Also you get a whole heck of a lot more for that 750 bucks than you do here. trash pick up, a paid full staffed fire rescue dept, a police officer around every corner. Well not every corner but probably a lot closer than an officer is to you right now if you're in QA. But there is a trade off between each, around here you have a little more space but less services. There you have to pay an arm and a leg for space.

Well duh. Howard County has a lot more people so naturally there police dept and funding is larger
Our fire dept does rather well also in my opinion
If you love Columbia so much then why are you here?
No clue how you can even compare the 2 places as they are completely different

What's wrong with the "old" one .... Welcome to Kent Island. ... now go home"? That would be more suitable these days

New Kent Island Sign? As you cross the bridge it reads: Welcome to Kent Island. We are glad to have you as a new resident. You are not the first person to call Kent Island home and you certainly will not be the last. Like most others who live here, you most likely chose to make Kent Island your home because of the affordable housing choices, close access to the Chesapeake, and within a reasonable commute to a metropolis. If you are old, you might want to wait till the 4 seasons is built. If you are young, you might want to wait till they build out Lowery’s farm. The existing stores are not the greatest but hopefully they will improve over time. I understand you want to be the last person to cross the bridge but Kent Island is such a desirable location that others are going to follow and be prepared for things to change. Oh and we actually have two MCD's. Be careful at the traffic circle because it is a traffic disaster in the making. Lastly, do not buy on SKI because the septic fields do not work! If you are homeless, you probably are driving a stolen car, so turn it around because you are not wanted here. OR, if you stay, just make sure it is not in my neighborhood. Also, don't think we are going to improve the Narrows. We like it the way it is, old and out of date. If you see any developers trying to improve the area and creating new jobs and commercial tax revenue, could you flip them off for us. Now keep going because our businesses dont need your dirty monies. Go spend your monies in Easton or Ocean City! Had to add to the sign. Still pretty welcoming, don't you think?
