Musings on the bumper crop of political signs currently cluttering our landscape ...
For the Sheriff candidate who's sign nearest the workboat marina proclaims "Supports Our Watermen" -- what possible relevance is there? The Sheriff's job is to enforce the law, not interpret it, and to treat everyone equal. Shameless pandering? (I'm not suggesting a preferred candidate, just ridiculing a message which is badly off of point ...)
Then there is the Judge of Orphans Court candidate that proudly displays Texan militaristic artwork -- what possible relevance is there to an 180-year old iconic flag of the Alamo in regard to this elected office? What does one's view on gun rights (or freedom from Mexico, or whatever the heck message is intended) have to do with fairly performing the role of orphans court judge? Do any of us want partisan gamesmanship to be applied to probating estates? Isn't this another role requiring consistent enforcement rather than interpretive agenda? I remember Gonzalez, I just question how it applies!
An aside related to the Orphans Court: one of our current Registrar of Wills candidates failed to even serve out his elected post to the Orphans Court for the current term. Seems to me that the Registrar of Wills requires a bit more dedication, and voters have a right to a work ethic that doesn't find it appropriate to walk away from office prior to the conclusion of the term sought ... there's always a greener pasture, it seems. Thankfully, there seem to be nearly seven-dozen candidates for this position -- at least some of them must know how to finish a job once started.
Back on the issue of campaign signs, I love seeing the Bay Bridge on multiple and various QAC political signs -- is that really the representative graphic for our large county? Is that singular image how we want to be defined? Alternatively, I do appreciate the giant, smiling headshots on political signs; thanks to those, I know when to hide and not answer the door, sinche I can identify the slick solicitors approaching ...
And what is the logic of vomiting out a cluster of identical signs in a single location? As if there are not enough candidates placing signs, certain candidates treat prime locations as a game of Risk and pile all their pieces in one territory. I don't get it ... Ironic that the people who want to clean up our county and state affairs make such a mess. Where's a good derecho when we need one?
Meet the new boss; same as the old boss. Right?
