I would like to hear from those who are pleased with their family physician and if so, do they take new patients.
We’ve been with the doctor we’ve had for over 30 years, and up until recently we’ve been pleased with him. He was originally in Centreville, but then move to River Family Physicians, He always had time to listen to you and you never felt as though he was on an allotted time with you. The only complaint we ever had was when he couldn’t fit you in you could get an appointment with a Physician Assistant. Two times we had problems with that, once the problem was misdiagnosed and the other time the wrong medication was prescribed. Our doctor wasn’t aware of these visits until we had to return to him when things had gotten worse. And of course we had to pay again to see him, so both times we ended up paying the twice for the visits. But over all he took his time with you, sometimes up to a half hour or more. You could call and ask to speak to his nurse/assistant and ask her to call in a refill for a prescription and it would get done.
All that seems to have changed now that they have joined up with AAMC and other than the doctors the staff has completely changed, even our doctors nurse/assistant, who job it now seems it to shield you from getting to the doctor should you have a question. The same was true before, but then the doctor would call you back, now she does and should you have another question, she’ll get back to you One time she was there with the doctor in the same room, but rather than let him answer the question she would get back to us. Also the doctor is always looking at his watch and when 15 minutes is up, that it.
Twice we have called in asking for referrals to be sent specialists we had appointments and when we got to the specialists they never got them and I had to run to our family physician office and get copies to take back. As it turned out they weren’t using the correct phone number.
The last straw was a refill of a prescription my wife has taken for years. The directions were: “Take 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed”. She got 150 pills for a month and a refill for 3 months. She need a refill this month so we called it in and left a message on the doctors answering system. When we got to the drugstore, the bill was twice the amount it usually was, they had no explanation for it and suggested we call the insurance, which we did. They said it was because it was written for “take 1 Tablet every 6 hours, rather than 4 to 6 hours but they had kept the quantity of 150 pills, which ran it over the amount of pills needed for the prescription as it was written.
