Were there any public hearings about the adoption of Common Core Standards?

I don't know a ton about Common Core except that transitioning children who are already in school is causing issues. I also know that the goal is not to just know what something is but why (hence those blogs that people are going crazy over that breaks down a simple math problem a lot differently then most of us have been taught). I know another goal is to teach children critical thinking, which I've heard many children lack when they are going from high school to College.
Regardless, our current system is obviously not doing to well when we compare ourselves to other industrialized nations.

As a Middle School Educator of 20+ years, I have to disagree! Common Core Curriculum allows for teachers to guide students to a reasoning process which allows for a fuller understanding of concepts. As the age of digital electronics is upon us all, students are inundated with quick response electronics, oftentimes they lose their ability to reason and determine their understanding through many avenues of thinking. Common Core allows for students to discover for themselves the why and how of their solutions. We all know that if we know the "why" of solutions, they have more meaning for us. The PARCC assessments which accompany the Common Core Curriculum will put all students nationwide on a common playing field. Students from any state will be on the same playing field when it comes to scholarships awarded to students who exhibit "true" understanding of concepts and not mere rote memory of skills. Too often students are not allowed to explore their different modes of understanding. Clearly we are not all alike in our understanding. We are all gifted in different avenues. It is time we all had the recognition for our intelligence, no mater how we come to the understanding of concepts.

If you always do what you always did, can you expect a different outcome? We must teach our students to reason and understand the why and how! Bravo for you for having that understanding!

I had someone call and ask me to do a survey about common core tonight. It took about 20 minutes, but that was because the guy was a robot. If you didn't answer the questions exactly as he had on his computer, he would ask again. So, it took a while, but I felt it was important because I am against it. It sounded to me to be that the company collecting the information was looking to see how many people were against it rather than a "pro-CC" company. This is truly the dumbing of our children IMO. They are trying to bring all of the children to the same level by education them the same rather than educating those with the extra abilities to excel.
I rarely ever accept calls from unavailable or unknown numbers, but I took this one because I was expecting an important call. When he said it was a survey about common core, I stayed on. I hope they get enough data to stop this nonsense.

You mean a survey, right? Not a surgery? I hope common core hasn't pervaded into the medical community.

You mean a survey, right? Not a surgery? I hope common core hasn't pervaded into the medical community. You've heard about Obamacare....right? Same thing....different propaganda. It's the "The devil we don't know MUST be better than the devil we know" thing....and...it's still rotten. I just have to wonder, what educational system and learning process did the people that drew up CC come through? The same system they now want us to throw away and view as "antiquated" and "ineffective" allowed them to get their very impressive, shiny diplomas that have made them think they "know what's best for us". They absolutely do not. By their own standards, their critical thinking and decision making processes are flawed due to their susb-standard education and the horrible conditions under which they were forced to struggle to learn. Sorry, the above paragraph made me laugh for a little while....the fact that the mega-minds in Washington, DC have decided THEY can determine a better way for children to learn and be taught is absolutely a comical. Anyone seen the state of the country lately??? Yea...trust THOSE people to "educate" anyone??? If I weren't laughing I would be crying. What People Who Haven't Been Paying Attention to Common Core Need To KnowThe Ten DUMBEST Common Core Problems
