Hello all,
I'm searching for trees/limbs I can cut up for firewood. My wife and I recently bought a house in Centreville (her grandfather who lives in Annapolis said we've just become "chicken neckers", not sure what that means) and want to heat primarily with wood. I'm originally from Hawaii but have been living in MD since 2007 but had to rely on oil so I'm totally new to wood burning. I had no idea it would be so hard to find downed trees/limbs to cut up! Figure people would love to have someone cut it up for free but I've had no luck so far. Anyone of ideas/suggestions? I'm experienced with chainsaws, just not burning wood as a primary heating source. Stupid Reid, bought a fireplace insert without fully researching how he will consistently acquire enough wood to recoup initial purchase price.
Appreciate any help you all can give. So far I'm extremely happy about moving to the eastern shore. Lived in Edgewater for a year before buying the house, way too much traffic over there.

Welcome! Without acreage your going to have to end up buying cord wood if you want to heat with it. Remember you start feeding that new stove junk wood you will gunk up the flue and chimney. The easiest thing is to get a pellet stove.

I heated with wood for many years back when I lived in far northern NY State, air tight stoves backed into fireplaces. Keep away from the soft woods like pine. It will burn too hot, too fast, and require more chimney maintenance in addition to the risk of a chimney fire. Stay with hardwoods and check the chimney periodically, go up on the roof on a sunny day with a mirror and shine the reflection down the chimney for inspection. Oh, I have a decent size oak tree on my property that is in the process of dying if you want it. Good luck, you will learn the true meaning of "spring cleaning".

cranky64, I hope not. Read a bunch of forums with everyone saying how easy it is to acquire free wood. oriolesfan, I'll definitely take them. I can get them ready for next winter. This year I'm getting 3-4 cords from the in-laws. Mix of poplar and pak. Tommy, Nice tip! Didn't think of using a mirror to look down the flue. I've been reading as much as possible about wood stoves and had no idea there was so much to it (i.e. secondary combustion, catalytic vs non-catalytic, etc). Oh yes, I'll definitely take the oak. P.S. Hope I used this quote function properly. Wish there was a way to test before posting.

Slightly off topic but we are looking to purchase fire wood and so far have not found a reliable source this year. If anyone knows of someone, please share.

I read a lot of places advertise seasoned firewood but sell recently cut stuff. Evidently it can take 2-3 years for some hardwood varieties to season properly! I may have to buy a digital wood moisture gauge thingy. It would really suck if I end up burning my house down using wet firewood.

We usually buy about once a year and we are careful to get seasoned wood.

emsguru - will the Grasonville guys deliver to Chesapeake Estates? Cheap is nice but at this point we're more interested in finding someone who will actually just deliver/show up when they say they will.

Don't know the number off the top of my head but the guy who lives on Main Street grasonville across from the elementary school has been consistent when I've called.
