While I'm one of the first to shake my head at the way-too-often "fog delays" that QACPS has, today should have been a no brainer. As of early yesterday all weather services were reporting a 100 percent chance of snow by 6AM and all were reporting below freezing conditions for the entire day, and well below freezing temps by evening.
The snow fell, as predicted, and it was cold, as predicted. The size of the storm left literally no room for error that we were going to get this storm. We even got a bit more snow than the last forecast, but that's not what the problem was. The snow base melted a bit from salt, but quickly refroze due to the temps. Route 8 was very slick as was 50 by 7AM.
With the knowledge that this was 100 percent going to happen, the schools should have been at least delayed for 2 hours, and in that delay time, a decision to close or not to close could have been made (in this case, they should have remained closed). Instead there was no word from the schools to the local media, and they basically just opened. They then announced that they would be closing 2 hours early and sending everyone back out on the roads.... Unreal.
While some of the Fog Delays and snow closings can be tricky based on timing and actual possibility, I get that a bad call can be made - usually on the side of caution. This time, with the knowledge that this was going to be exactly what it turned out to be, they dropped the ball. Let's hope that they learn from this.
